Local Family History Resources in the Oklahoma City Area

Knowing your ancestry can be a wonderful piece of knowledge to have, and for many people, pinpointing their heritage relies more on family rumors and stories than actual evidence. If you live in the greater Oklahoma City metro area, there are several businesses which offer genealogical services to the public. Although theses services are rarely free, tracing your family tree doesn't have to be a mystery anymore, and sentimental value of what you find may be well worth the initial price.

Diggin' Deep Genealogical Research is a Norman based service headed independently by Frederick Dittmar. Dittmar specializes in ascertaining the genealogy of people who moved or passed through Oklahoma from the late 1800's up to the 1930's. Diggin' Deep utilizes court records, land deeds and other filed information kept at court houses to help find a family history. Because traveling is often essential, Diggin' Deep does charge hourly and for gas or hotel expenses. Expect to pay $15.00 dollars for the first hour and an additional $20.00 per hour after that. Dittmar charges 40 cents a mile and a $10/hr flat fee for travel time. Parking fees or other incurred charges are also billed to the customer.

Another option is the Oklahoma Genealogical Society. This non-profit organization was created in 1955 to connect Oklahomans to their ancestry. Memberships in the society costs $20.00 a year for individuals or $25.00 a year for families. With the membership, the society also sends out a quarterly paper which includes various genealogical topics. The society meets up on the very first Monday of every month at 6:00 PM at the Chesapeake Event Center of the Oklahoma History Center. It's located on 2401 N. Laird Ave in Oklahoma City. Seminars and workshops are commonly offered to members. For research, the Oklahoma Genealogical Society charges $15.00 an hour. More information can be found at their website.

Oklahoma is home to many different cultures which can make tracing a family tree more of a guessing game than anything else. With the help of these genealogical services you can find out what you need faster and with more detail. It's fun to get that sense of discovery on your own, but the amount of research and work can require more time than busy individuals can devote. Both Diggin' Deep Genealogical Research and the Oklahoma Genealogical Society are professionals at what they do. Expect the best service possible for the price with both of these options. More specific information can be found on the web.
