Watch a video demonstration of how human and pet hair booms work.
Matter of Trust is a charity based in San Francisco collecting hundreds of thousands of pounds of human hair and animal clippings from salons and groomers across the country. The hair is then stuffed into recycled nylons and used as containment booms in the ocean. These booms absorb oil and contain spills, and at the same time are useful and renewable resources.
In addition to its base in San Francisco, Matter of Trust has multiple collection sites, including 20,000 square feet of donated space in Fort Myers, Fla.
One local Orlando grooming salon, Woof Orlando, is committed to donating animal fur clippings to this project. Woof Orlando is located across from Edgewater High School in College Park, 3019 Edgewater Dr.
Any human hair salon or pet grooming salon can sign up with Matter of Trust to donate hair clippings to help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf.
The idea of hair and fur booms belongs to Alabama stylist Phil McCrory, McCrory realized how efficient hair was at absorbing oil out of the air, off your skin and even out of the water. With tons of hair clippings going into the waste stream each year, he realized it could be used to combat environmental disasters, such as the Gulf oil spill.

Post a CommentGreat idea... Maybe BP could show some good faith by having all their executives (men and women and androids) shave their heads and have the hair sent to the Gulf ASAP!
