Local Haiti Relief: How Fargo Residents Can Give Back

Red River Flooding Victims Can Give Back by Helping Haiti

Tonya Hillukka
Fargo, ND - The spring of 2009 brought flooding to Fargo, along with volunteers from all around to help with evacuation and sandbagging.

Fifteen helicopters were sent from the U.S. Northern Command to assist Fargo as it prepared for record flooding. Sandbagging operations churned furiously throughout the week in an attempt to save Fargo homes from damage. Thousands of people evacuated from neighborhoods, hospitals, and nursing homes.

"North Dakotans have come together in a big, big way. Our volunteers are doing a magnificent job building this flood protection and we want to say thank you to them," said North Dakota Gov. John Hoeven, "There's a sense of perseverance and resolve and determination."

It is not only the people of Fargo who were affected by the flooding - across the Red River homes were lost in Moorhead, Minnesota, as well. And it is not just the people of North Dakota who came together in an effort to help out. People came from all around to give what they could.

Now it is time for us to give back. Recent reports number between 45,000 and 50,000 people killed and as many as three million people have been injured or made homeless in Haiti, due to a 7.0 magnitude earthquake this past week.

    Dear Readers,

I find it discussing that our leaders are mobilizing for Haiti
when they did not do that for Katrina.

We should have had our entire military:
army, navy, marines, air force, coast guard, and National Guard
descend on the Katrina area. The area is still in bad shape.

Yes, I know I sound cold hearted,
but my mother would feed the neighbors and let me starve.
Our country does the exact same thing.
We are feeding the world, giving them our hard earned money, etc
when we should be taking care of our own family.

So when I see that America has ships off the coast of Haiti,
I wish I could tell them, "Shame on you."
    Our family should come first.
Afterward, you can help the neighbors.
