There is a huge contingent of Halloween fans in the metropolitan Detroit area. Gone are those days when "Devil's Night" (the night before Halloween) meant a rash of fires and mayhem on the streets. These days, the celebration of Halloween are within the eyes of the law, and anything but mundane.
One such attraction is the Amazing Corn Maze. Two miles of trails are cut into a corn field located near 32 Mile and Rochester Road in Leonard, Michigan During the day, the Amazing Corn Maze delights bus loads of school children, but at night, the maze is converted into the Haunted Corn Maze. For $10, visitors can be scared out of their wits in this massive, outdoor maze. There's something especially disturbing about this "middle of nowhere" experience. Haunted Nights begin on Fridays and Saturdays during the month of October. For more information, visit their web site for directions, or call them at 248.628.4014.
The Terrified Forest and Manor is another hauntingly Halloween destination. Located just north of Ann Arbor in Pinckney, Michigan, the Terrified Forest and Manor is recommended for mature teens and adults only. Visitors can pay admission for the Manor ($7) or the Forest ($15) or combine the two ($20). The web site posts a few graphic photos, and this is one attraction that is not for the weak of heart or stomach. More information can be found on their web site, or you can call 734.878.0018. Terrified Forest and Manor will be open on weekends in October, and every night during the week before Halloween.
For those with younger children, Greenfield Village, part of the Henry Ford Museum, is also getting into the spirit, by hosting Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village on weekends starting October 10. Over 800 hand-carved jack-o-lanterns light the way, with thick fog, special effects and spooky sounds. There will be 11 "sweets and treats" stations, where various goblins will hand out goodies. Goodie bags will be provided. Pricing ranges from $12.75 to $15, depending upon membership. Children 2 and under are free, and parking is $5 per vehicle. You can make your reservation by calling 313.982.6001, or by visiting their web site.
The Detroit Zoo is once again hosting the Zoo Boo, a family friendly attraction starting October 17 and continuing weekends through the month. Held from 6 to 8 p.m., the Zoo Boo transforms the huge grounds into a scary wonderland. Tickets for Zoo Boo are on sale now. The Detroit Zoo is located at 8450 W. Ten Mile Road in Royal Oak, at the I-696 and Woodward interchange. More information can be found on their web site, or you can contact the zoo directly at 248.541.5717.
Don't forget to check out your local city for Halloween activities. Here in Royal Oak, the city is once again hosting its Ghastly Spooktacular Weekend on October 24 through 26. Local businesses will be participating, with special sales for the adults. The small fry are treated to the Spooktacular Trick or Treating on Sunday, October 26 between 2 and 4 p.m. It's always fun to see youngsters dressed up during the day, and the Spooktacular offers a safe alternative for the very young. Best of all, admission to the Spooktacular is free. Interested parties should call 248.246.3065 for more information.
Finally, for those who want to search for costumes, there are several local costume stores. The best around has to be Sutton's, which is located at 4500 Dixie Highway in Waterford, Michigan. Their rental costumes are well-made, and there are many different types to choose from, including the famous, Victorian, period costumes, Western, Renaissance and much more. Be advised that the best ones go early, so going there early in the months is best. Their phone number is 248.673.2320. Halloween USA is also in business, offering costumes for purchase, theatrical make up, and much more. A list of local stores now open for Halloween business can be found on their web site. With 43 locations in Michigan, a Halloween USA store is likely nearby.
No matter what your interest or age group, a lot of great Halloween attractions can be found nearby in metro Detroit.
