Finding the Right Instructor for Your Child

Ashley V
Finding a good riding lesson can be a lot harder than it sounds. You need to find someone that you can work with as a parent, and more importantly, who can work with your child and the way they learn. You should keep in mind what type of instructor would be best for your child's personality. Next, consider what level your child is, what level they want to reach, and any competition you both may have set your eyes upon. Also think about how much time you want to dedicate. You can take a younger child for a few lessons as a treat or to see if horseback riding is something you want to pursue. If you have an older child, consider finding a 'clinic' with a bigger name instructor. These lessons can be one or two days, and can be an exciting opportunity for your child if you already have a regular instructor. Once you have a regular instructor, they will help you find lessons with champions like Bruce Davidson. But let's find an instructor first!

For a beginning student you can consider large group lessons at a lesson barn, but you may feel as if you are being processed through a kiddie riding lesson factory. A smaller, private barn may be a good place to start. They can be quieter, and your child (and you!) can have a chance to take in this new, and sometimes daunting, experience. Smaller barns may offer lessons that are not restricted to an hour, and will give you the opportunity to get used to being around a small horse or pony. Be sure to ask for experience and background on both the instructor and the horse you will be working with. Achievements with Ashley (me!) is a small private barn in
Chester County near Radnor Hunt. The pony, "Heather" is one of the best lesson ponies ever, just ask any one of the lucky kids who have had the pleasure to spend time with her. Ashley is a graduate of the Radnor Hunt Pony Club and loves introducing new riders to fun world of ponies!

If you are looking for experienced Dressage instruction, Erika Fleury is a top notch choice. Dressage is an important building block for any rider, even if your student is interested in showing or jumping. Dressage teaches balance and the delicate communication between horse and rider. Erika has 25 years of experience and a comprehensive website, which is another positive sign of an instructor that is established.

Reinbow's End Farm offers lessons and a camp experience. Owner and Instructor John Muldoon offers every possible type of lesson, and has an indoor arena which allows for riding on even the rainiest day! With a full compliment of instructors you can find a lesson for a beginner, or for someone more advanced. The farm offers Equitation in all seats, jumping and showing instruction. Information can be requested here.

Feel free when you are looking for lessons to call around and ask for tours of any barn you are interested in. think of it as shopping for a car, you don't buy the first one you see. Instructors are interested in you and your child's goals and want to know if they are a good fit for you, as much as you want to know if they are the kind of person you may spend a lot of quality time with.
