Local Memorial Day Events in Fort Worth for 2009

Where to Celebrate the Holiday with Your Friends and Family

Bob McCoog
Memorial Day, the unofficial start of Summer, is fast approaching. Although a three day weekend is much appreciated, sometimes there is the annoying act of trying to find a place to go celebrate the weekend with friends and family. Do you want to go ahead and deal with the hundreds of people crowding the local lakes? Or do you want to go watch another losing game by the Texas Rangers? Is sitting at home around a grill, drinking beer not your idea of an enjoyable time? Then to help you figure out what to do this Memorial Day weekend, the following list provides alternative options for the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area.

If you wish to pay your respects to the many Americans who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country, or to say goodbye to fallen comrades if you are a veteran, then there will be, as there is every year, a memorial service at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. The Cemetery is located at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway in Dallas. If you are not able to make it for the service, feel free to still stop by for a quiet moment of reflection or prayer.

After paying your respects, you can head out to watch some of golf's greatest play at the 63rd Annual Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. The stars of today face off against golf's heroes of the past during the competition. If you are interested and would like directions, please click here for more information. If the competition is like it was last year, this year's Invitational should prove to be very exciting. According to the Fort Worth calendar of events web page, last year's winner Phil Mickelson and golfing greats Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus are some of the names that will be in town.

Now, if golfing is not your thing, and you are more a fan of fireworks, then the Fort Worth Cats have the answer that you are looking for Memorial Day. The Fort Worth Cats website (www.fwcats.com) does not specify if there is a price, but for season ticket holders, you are automatically guaranteed a seat for the event. If you don't have a ticket, don't despair. Le Grave Field is designed in such a way that the outfield opens up to a large field where you and the family can sit and watch the event. I have attended the seen the Fort Worth Cats fireworks shows before, and they are truly a sight to be seen.

There are many other parades throughout the day as well as other celebrations to be found in Fort Worth. However, these three items will be definite ways to change about your normal Memorial Day routine. Of course, if none of these items are your thing, you can always come and visit me and watch the Texas Rangers lose once again and drink a beer or two while we grill some hot dogs.
