Local Movie Theaters in Richmond, VA

Susan Ayers
Like many big cities, Richmond, VA has its share of movie theaters. What makes Richmond different is the diversity of the theaters - from big box cinemas to a national landmark, the theaters here provide something for everyone.

The Byrd Theater

Located in Carytown, the Byrd Theater is a national landmark. The Byrd features $1.99 movies twice a night. The low cost combined with the fact that they don't show previews is a big plus for Richmonders especially those with families. The Mighty Wurlitzer organ is a big hit on Saturday nights as there is a live organ show before the performances. Richmond North Side resident Lynn Taylor says "the Byrd is a beautiful reminder of the dedication and hard work craftsmen put into buildings of that time. With the murals, paintings, marble and chandeliers, one forgets they are in a movie theater. Combine that with the live organ, no previews and $1.99 movie, you can get swept into another era." The Byrd also hosts special events and area fundraisers.

Bow Tie Cinema

The first Multiplex cinema opened in Richmond early in 2009. The Bow Tie cinema located at Boulevard Square has 17 screens, deluxe accommodations such as a wine and beer café and a large assortment of hot foods on the menu. Special events like the Insomniac Theater which shows cult classics such as the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Sunday morning Movies and Mimosas give the theater special flair. In an effort return to a bygone film era, Bow Tie Cinemas has chosen not to show commercials before their films. Richmond resident Maureen Lalonde attended the opening night and had a great experience. She says "it was great considering it was opening night. We took in a show that evening. We arrived early to have a bite to eat before the show. We ordered pizza and sat at the bar and had a drink." As with any grand opening, there were a few glitches but Maureen points out that they were quickly resolved by the management and staff and that she received excellent customer service.

Short Pump14

The Regal Cinemas located in Short Pump Town Center is a popular venue for teenagers, families and adults alike. The central location makes it convenient to many area restaurants and there is ample free parking. With 14 screens, all the most popular movies show frequently. The theater hosted a widely successful summer free movie festival in 2008 showing popular kids movies that drew large crowds.

Westchester Commons Stadium 16

The new Westchester Shopping Center opened a key establishment on Friday, April 17, 2009: the Westchester Commons Stadium 16 Movie Theater. Located right off of 288 in Richmond, the theater features rocking type chairs with removable cup holders. This allows for seating for two and is an unusual concept around Richmond. Movie goers can enjoy movies in 3D at the theater as the theater features a state-of-the-art digital 3D projection system.

Goochland Drive-In

Good news for drive-in theater fans, the Goochland Drive-in is scheduled to open this summer near Hadensville which is located about 30 miles West of Richmond. Owners John and Kristina Heidel want to honor the 'traditions of yesterday' and provide area residents with a great value and so they are offering a double feature and a concession stand at the drive-in. For updates on the grand opening, visit the Goochland Drive-in Theater site at www.goochlanddriveintheater.com.
