National Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut Dorothy "Dottie" Metcalf-Lindenburger will be speaking at two churches in Fort Collins Wednesday, May 19th.

The 34-year-old astronaut has just returned from a mission to space on the STS-131 Discovery. The Discovery shuttle launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 5th, 2010, en route to resupply the International Space Station with hardware, supplies, equipment, and new crew sleeping quarters. The mission was completed in 15 days.

Metcalf-Lindenburger attended Fort Collins High School and taught five years of earth science and astronomy at a Vancouver, Washington high school, as well as performing research with the KECK Consortium for two summers. She began her journey as an astronaut in 2004 and has been in space for over 362 hours.

ABC News calls Metcalf-Lindenburger the "most unlikely of astronauts, with riotously curly hair and a bubbly personality. . . . She is a far cry from the test pilots with the right stuff who flew the legendary Apollo missions."

She and husband Jason have a three-year-old, "very independent" daughter, Cambria.

Metcalf-Lindenburger will be speaking first at 4:30pm at the First United Methodist Church, located at 1005 Stover Street. She will speak again at 7pm at Christ Center Community Church, located at 2700 South Lemay Avenue. Both churches are located in Fort Collins, Colorado.

From the classroom to outer space. She has literally and figuratively gone a long way. I'm sure she will be an inspiration to her daughter as well as others hoping to excel in this type of profession.
