Local Political Offices Are a Great Resource for the Voting Public in Geauga County Ohio
A Contributor Perspective: Access to Many Resources for Expressing Our Political Activism

Recently I visited the local office of the Geauga County Democrats, and was pleasantly surprised to be able to meet directly with a worker who was very helpful. Volunteer Bonnie C. was kind enough to sit with me and go through the questions i had about the Democrat Candidates for the election coming up in November.
The offices have been open extra hours in preparation for November, and they are more than happy to have people stop in and visit. Unfortunately there were no candidates available to speak with that evening, but again the volunteer I met with was extremely helpful, and knowledgeable as well. The point is that we have these political support resources available to us in our communities and they are in place to help support the candidates, but also to help the voters to be more informed and hopefully more involved!
The Geauga County Democrat's office is only a few miles from my home, and I end up passing it at least six or eight times a week. I had noticed over the past few weeks that it has been lit up almost every night, and there seems to be more activity in these offices over the past few weeks than I can ever remember. They have recently expanded and remodeled their space, and they now have a full kitchen with everything it takes to host an event, even able to host meetings that come with a prepared meal. This is a smart addition to their place as it helps them to keep the cost of functions at a minimum. The open hall side of the office space appears to be large enough to accommodate about a hundred people if I were to guess.
In a recent meeting with Bonnie C., who is one of the volunteers at the Geauga County Democrats office, I learned that the group has been very active with numerous events lately, one of which is having candidates come in to the office for face to face talks with county residents. It is important to know that these meetings are for anyone in the general public, but they would prefer for you to become a registered voter if you are interested in visiting any of their meetings. This makes sense and follows along with an agreement that my group of friends have had since our days at college that if you don't vote then you cannot participate in any political discussions. A very wise plan if you want to avoid having any uninformed commentary when you discuss important topics like this.
One of the best things I see coming from this office is the amount of face time they are affording each candidate with local voters. According to their events calendar they are planning meetings right up to the election. The next event they have listed is Geauga Democratic Womens Caucus Meeting on Wednesday October 20, 2010. At their meeting they plan to discuss upcoming election issues, plus they will be filling out postcards in support of the Democratic candidates. All are welcome, but they will ask you to fill out a membership application when you arrive. you can do this in advance by going to their link for the "membership application form" which is in Adobe .PDF format. You can also visit their office at 12420 Kinsman Road, Newbury Ohio, 44065. Phone: 1-440-218-2747.
If you know of anyone who is interested in learning about the candidates and the issues then they should stop in and visit with the volunteers and any candidates who may be there at the time. It is the best way to get an up close look at the important debate topics during this upcoming election. If you want to really get to know the candidates, then you really should spend some time getting to know the people at your local political committee offices. There are obviously republican headquarters, plus independent, tea party, and many more, you just have to know where to find their headquarters. Interestingly the Internet should be helping voters to get more involved and yet the number of voters at each election out here in Geauga County is still at a dismal level.
Why is it that we take such an important freedom for granted? I asked Lois Hewitt who is a local reporter for the Villager about this, and after she explained to me that the salad days of political involvement peaked with "Daddy Ron" AKA: Ronald Reagan. And that since then her apathy levels have done nothing but grow, eventually leading her to believe that voting is a pointless act of futility which only lets your coworkers and neighbors now that you are not a communist. Her dad would have been proud of her for taking a stand, but he would also continue to bug her relentlessly to coerce her into getting out and voting.
So now the end of our driveway is littered with signs, with an imaginary line painted down the middle, half republican, half democrat. It makes for some great debates and very comical retorts when one or the other misses a beat in the election rhetoric game. But it really is better to have a friendly dispute over the issues and candidates versus having no opinion at all.
Why should people contact the volunteers at these election headquarters? Because they are an important cog in the machinery where they possess factual information and data about each candidate which may be difficult for you to retrieve without the help of someone in the know. It is imperative that if you intend to vote that you get the facts on all of the issues, and that you do it in person with the candidates where practical. The Geauga County Democrats are working hard to create the opportunities so that we may communicate directly with these interesting candidates. If nothing else their presence can help increase voter turnout by raising more awareness about the issues with higher visibility within our communities!
So not matter which line you prefer to vote, the important thing is that you actually do get out just do it!
