Local Review: Groff's Restaurant in Wildwood, New Jersey - Convenience Food at the Beach

Arthur Kirk
One of my biggest complaints when I vacation at the beach is the lack of restaurants that serve comfort food. Well, at Groff's Restaurant in Wildwood, New Jersey you can find many of your favorite convenience foods at reasonable prices. Groff's Restaurant is located at 423 East Magnolia Avenue in Wildwood, New Jersey. The combination of affordable prices and availability of comfort foods has made Groff's Restaurant one of my family's favorites in Wildwood for a long time. Unfortunately for anyone that visited Groff's years ago but hasn't been back recently, they have discontinued their policy of offering a free piece of their delicious pie with any entree.

Appetizers at Groff's Restaurant in Wildwood, New Jersey are very typical of any restaurant you will find in your home town. These tend to be the fried variety, and nothing special. They are reasonably priced for Wildwood, New Jersey though at $6-9 per appetizer. So, if you are very hungry and want to share one at least they won't cost you an arm and a leg. The most unique one is probably the clams in garlic herb broth, but that broth sometimes can be a little on the overly salty side.

Meat is what I think of when I think of comfort foods, and Groff's Restaurant in Wildwood, New Jersey does not dissapoint. Groff's offers thirteen different meat selections ranging from $14-23 each. My favorites are on the lower end of this range and include the Roast Pork and the Pot Roast, both have plenty of vegetables and the gravy they are cooked with is great. In the middle of the price range is a very good Veal Parmigiana offering. The veal is nice, though you do not get a lot of it. The sauce is surprisingly good, I was expecting a standard marinara but this sauce seemed to be fresh and maybe have a little extra spice to it.

Seafood entrees at Groff's Restaurant in Wildwood, New Jersey are average. The thing is as long as you order the ones on the lower end of the $16-31 price range you will do quite well in getting a bargain. The Tilapia and Crab Cakes are both at the lower end of this range and cooked just as you request. The crab cakes have quite a bit of lump meat and very little filler which is surprising. These two selections are usually $10-15 more at similar restaurants in Wildwood, New Jersey and not as good at those restaurants as they are at Groff's.

Remember how I said that the slice of pie is no longer free? Well, that doesn't mean you should ignore it. Groff's is famous among locals and repeat vacationers in Wildwood, New Jersey for their pies. They have a large variety of selections, and they are all homemade. A couple of my favorites include the apple crumb pie and the banana cream pie. The lemon meringue pie has received raves from other members of my family as has the coconut cream pie. These pies are so popular many times people from out of town order them for their Thanksgiving Holiday dinners.

Overall Groff's in Wildwood, New Jersey does what they need to and draws in the crowds. Groff's is not fine dining, but they don't claim to be. They are known for their convenience food and pies, and both are great. Keep in mind during the summer months, that the waiting time at Groff's Restaurant in Wildwood, New Jersey after 6 pm can be over two hours.

  • The pies her are incredible, unfortunately no more free slices with an entree ordered.
  • Kids meals tend to be a little expensive here at $8-10 each.
  • Avoid the lobster, the servings are very small and you can do better for the same price elsewhere.
Even though the pies are no longer free, at $3 per slice and $4.25 ala mode they are still well worth the price.
