Lock Bumping Prevention

Jennifer Wagner
You may think that your family is safe from a burglary because you have securely locked your doors and bolted your windows. But what if you're not? What if there is a master key that will unlock every lock in your neighborhood, your city, and beyond.

Lock bumping, also known as key bumping, is a lock picking technique that allows thieves to enter your home with a specially made key called a bump key. A bump key will work on 90% of homes across the country. With a bump key, a thief can enter your home in a matter of seconds without damaging your lock or leaving any indication that your lock has been infiltrated whatsoever.

To see a video of how lock bumping works, made by Medeco, maker of high security locks, please CLICK HERE. This video demonstrates how easy a bump key is to use, and how quickly a thief can enter your home undetected.

A bump key is made using an ordinary house key. A series of special cuts are made on the key which will allow the key to work on virtually any lock. Once the bump key is made, a thief can place it in a lock. The key will NOT turn the lock by simply sliding it in. Thieves will lightly tap the key using a screwdriver or other item, which in turn forces the specially designed key deeper into the keyway. Since the teeth of the bump key have been altered, the 'bumping' forces the bottom pins inside the lock to move out of the way and the bump key turns the lock.

Lock bumping is real. It is not a rumor or an urban myth. Lock bumping is a very serious threat that affects everyone. Fortunately, there are several options for lock bumping prevention.

Lock bumping prevention is necessary regardless of where you live. Thieves know all about the art of lock bumping, as they can find details on how to make a bump key all over the Internet. You can insure the safety of your home by using any, or all of the following lock bumping prevention tips:

Lock bumping prevention -

- Purchase a high security lock that cannot be bumped. High security locks are made by companies such as Medeco, Armstrong, and Schlage Primius, among others, and while they will cost more than a typical lock, they will also eliminate the threat of a thief breaking into your home using a bump key.

- Use home alarm systems. This is a more expensive option than simply purchasing a high security lock, but it also increases the level of protection for your home and family.

- Pets are a great deterrent against theft. Obviously, a large dog is the best choice for protection, but it is not necessary to train your dog to be vicious for it to adequately protect your family and home. A loving family dog will scare away thieves too.

- Security lighting is an affordable option for lock bumping prevention. The light exposes and frightens criminals, who will likely move on to a home that is shielded by darkness.

By following any of the lock bumping prevention tips listed here, you can rest assured that your home is safe and secure. Take the steps necessary to insure that your family does not become a victim of crime.

Oh, blimey. The crooks get smarter all the time. Some burglars were in the village here recently, and removed the windows of houses without breaking the glass. Important advice.

most crooks are looking to get in fast - they break a window in and out fast. We have an alarm system but even with one they would be gone before the sheriff arrives.

I found out about this from the security guy when we repatriated to the US. I had never heard about it before because we always lived in safe areas.

    Hello,

I work for www.BumpKey.US (Original US site) and I can tell you that while the bump key does work EXTREMELY well, it's not a tool that needs to cause mass panic; let me explain.

To properly use a bump key you must have a bit of patience and determination. These two traits are not something that the common burglar will demonstrate or possess. As shown in the video the expert must 'whack' the key with a hammer -- you can imagine the sound that this is going to make -- it's not going to be silent.
You also must realize that while the burglar is trying to do the key bumping he has to sit stand in front of the door which will cause alarm.

If you are really interested in security, invest in outside lighting which will deter criminals. Actually utilize the locks on your doors windows. Upgrade the door frame to better withstand a kick-in attempt as this is a VERY easy method (and much quicker!) than using a bump key.
