Lodging Review: Inn at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, Oregon

Romantic Lodging for Reasonable Rates

Lyn McCallister
Picturesque Cannon Beach, along the northern Oregon coastline, is famous for its large, 235 foot granite monolith known as Haystack Rock. This towering rock provides a welcome refuge to many marine animals and birds, including some protected species. If you want to visit Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock, there are many fine lodging choices ranging from house rentals to large hotels to small intimate motels. One such small motel is the Inn at Haystack Rock with reasonable pricing and close proximity to the rock itself.

Quick Stats:

What: Inn at Haystack Rock

Where: 632 South Hemlock Street, Cannon Beach, OR 97110

Reservations: 800-507-2714

Although the Inn at Haystack Rock is not beachfront lodging, you will be located just about one block from ocean access and about three blocks from the quaint Cannon Beach downtown shopping district. This small motel has just 8 rooms, all on a single level with most rooms facing towards a Spanish themed courtyard and garden. Since there is not a second level at this motel, you will have much less distraction from neighboring guests.

During a recent visit, I stayed in at the Inn at Haystack Rock and got to tour 3 of the motel rooms, starting at $59 for an off-season, mid-week rate. The rooms range from a simple, one bedroom queen to a private cottage with full kitchen and jetted spa tub. I selected a one bedroom queen with fireplace for $69 plus tax which I found to be very reasonable for Cannon Beach lodging.

Be advised that rates do increase during the on season and on weekends, just like the other lodging choices in Cannon Beach.

The room was nicely appointed with unique, handcrafted furnishings. There was also a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, toaster as well as glasses, dishes, and silverware. The room contained a flat panel television and DVD player. Free DVDs are available at the front desk.

The queen bed was perfectly made, clean, and fresh with white linens and comforter. A decorative throw added a little color accent to the base of the bed. The bed was soft-not too firm and not too plush. My favorite part of the bed was the handcrafted headboard, depicting an Oregon sunset.

The private bathroom contained a tub/shower combination while the sink was located outside in the kitchenette area. Complimentary soap and shampoo are provided, although I could not find a hair dryer in my room so be sure to ask the front desk or bring your own.

The rooms at the Inn at Haystack Rock do come with private patios where you can enjoy your coffee while watching the bubbling fountain. After coffee, you can take a stroll to the beach access and view the famous Haystack Rock up close and personal.

I do recommend the Inn at Haystack Rock for your next Cannon Beach visit, provided you have only 2 guests. The rooms have queen beds and are really not set-up for families. The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, perfect for a romantic getaway!
