B&Bs, Resorts, Lodges and Hotels Offer Diverse Accommodations

Patricia Sicilia
Bethel, New York, is best known as the site of the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a performance center and museum located at the site of the original 1969 Woodstock festival. Located in New York's Sullivan County, Bethel is also proximate to Lake Superior State Park, the Monticello and Sullivan County Raceways and the Holiday Mountain Ski area, as well as several casinos and golf courses.

Since camping out at Max Yasgur's farm is no longer an option, the following hotels, resorts and bed and breakfasts offer diverse experiences and amenities for those visiting the Bethel area.

Bradstan Country Hotel: Broadway came to White Lake, New York, when former New York performers Scott Samuelson and Eddie Dudek opened this award winning bed and breakfast just outside of Bethel. This seasonal hotel, open from May to December, is set in an early 20th century estate house overlooking White Lake in the Catskill Mountains.

Eclectic antiques and period furnishings provide a pleasant ambiance in Bradstan's three large rooms, two mini-suites and two cottages. All have queen beds, sitting areas and comfortable chairs and/or sofas and private baths with tub and/or showers. Other amenities include AC, ceiling fans, telephones, cable TV and VCRs. The two cottages have fully-equipped eat-in galley kitchens.

Breakfast is included with the room price and features homemade breads, hard-boiled eggs, cereals, fruit, bagels, muffins and cheese and specials such as Country Stuffed French Toast.

Villa Roma Resort
: Eight miles from Bethel in Callicoon, New York, the Villa Roma Resort was awarded Fodor's Choice 2010 Award for the "best of the best," in hotel/resort destinations. The Villa Roma offers vacation packages and theme weekends which include meals, accommodations and entertainment. The resort sponsors day trips to local tourist attractions and activities such as river rafting. Onsite activities include a game room, pool, spa services, a sports complex, holiday programs and seasonal activities and an OTB parlor. The golf course has been called "A little slice of heaven," and is considered to have the best fairways and greens in the region. Children's programs grouped by age are offered, and baby sitting services are available.

Accommodations at Villa Roma feature one or two bedroom suites with king or queen beds, and mini suites and guest rooms with queen or full sized beds. All rooms include private baths, cable TV, telephones, daily housekeeping, coffee pots and irons and ironing boards.

Fosterdale Motor Lodge: The Fosterdale sits on acres of grassy, wooded land with a nature trail winding through the fields and a pond that draws deer, turkey, ducks and the occasional bald eagle. If your main objective is to visit the Bethel Woods Arts Center, Fosterdale is the closest lodging, and has been dubbed "The Official Lodging for the Original Site of the Woodstock Festival in Bethel."

The Fosterdale offers economy units with double and single beds, a motel unit with two double or queen beds and efficiencies with queen and sofa beds or rollaways, stove, sink refrigerator and microwave. All units have AC, private baths, cable TV, in room phones with free local calling and Internet. Amenities include barbecue grills, picnic tables, laundry room and a nearby convenience store.

Best Western Monticello Hotel: The Best Western Monticello is a full-service hotel in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. The 62 guest rooms each feature cable satellite TV with HBO® and wireless Internet. Amenities include complimentary continental breakfast, indoor pool, steam room, whirlpool, hot tub and game room. Nearby activities include golf courses, water sports on White Lake and skydiving or hot air ballooning in nearby Bethel or Middletown. Annual events held in the Monticello area include music festivals, golf and baseball tournaments and the annual Jeep Jamboree.

It would be really interesting to go there one day, just to see where history was made. Unfortunately it was in my early teens, and of course being in the UK I could not have easily gone anyhow. Must have been mind blowing in more ways than one.
