Logging into a Dating Site While Dating Someone

Michael Martin

You've been dating a new guy from the online dating scene, but uh-oh, he just logged in. Read on for the potential laundry list of reasons as to why the guy you recently met decided to fire up the laptop.

It could be innocent. Your new beau could just be finishing out his membership and then planning on not renewing for the month.

He could be checking to see if you logged in. Both of you will go back and forth like a peek-a-boo game. It's like a bad seventh grade dance until somebody broaches the subject, and you agree to end the charades.

Then, there are the not so innocent reasons.

He may be interested in you, but he wants to continue to shop for groceries. You might have made a good impression for the time being, but he may want to see what else is out there by comparing apples to apples.

Along the same lines, he's looking to see if he received any new emails. If a potential interesting suitor has shown some interest, he may start an email exchange and see where it leads. Meanwhile, he's got you for the time being.

The worst of all scenarios is that he's a player. This is the guy that's trying to line up dates with anyone within a twenty mile radius of his zip code, and you landed right on his map.

How to Handle

You need to pick off the player early. Check to see if he continually logs in or worse yet, he makes changes to his profile but doesn't say he's taken, which is a dead giveaway that he's looking elsewhere. Be prepared to answer why you logged in, if he tries to flip it back on you. If you honestly are not looking for other emails, let him know that you noticed his active profile and see how he answers the question. You'll know right away what he's thinking, judging by his response. If it's not one of the innocent reasons, it may be time to re-up your membership.
