Logo Design Ideas for Start-up Companies

Don Simkovich
Designing a logo can help a start-up company immediately stand out from the competition.

When choosing ideas for a logo design, a start-up company should develop a symbol that is easily reproducible and signifies a key corporate value. KalistR is an action sports apparel line that is seeing its logo have a positive impact on their position in the marketplace as a start-up company.

Company Values

KalistR promotes action apparel as a California lifestyle and takes its name from the slang "Cali" and star representing the term for sun. Its headquarters is in Santa Monica, California.

"We have California in the logo," said Eric, who is the co-founder, "and anything coming out of California is followed."

A key value for KalistR is having products manufactured within California while key suppliers are located throughout the United States.

Eric, who grew up surfing and skateboarding in Southern California, said the label can truly read "Made in California" while established competitors like Billabong have labels on clothing with "Made in China."

Logo Details

The KalistR logo is easily reproducible across all media platforms. Visit the company's Web site and the logo shows a silver circle surrounding a blue figure. This represents the state of California and the right side of a letter "k." A thin space separates the elements and a star is located in the southern portion of the "k."

The logo stands out dramatically on its Facebook page.

Impact of Logo

"Everyone who has seen the logo has asked 'where did you get that?'," remarked Eric.

The KalistR logo was designed by another co-founder, Larry who is a long-time friend with Eric. The third partner, Kyle, is a Certified Public Accountant.

The logo, along with the "Made in California" label has given the company credibility. It attracted nearly 5,000 fans on its Facebook page after the first six months with a growing international fan base stretching from Europe to Asia.

Sponsored Athletes

KalistR also sponsors 30 action sports athletes in surfing, skateboarding, and motocross from around the United States and Canada.

The athletes place well in competitions and carry the corporate message and values.

KalistR plans to continue sponsoring athletes in all forms of action sports.

"If they're not surfing, they're skateboarding or riding motorcycles," said Eric. "People see [the athletes] and know they're legit and know our company is legit."

KalistR currently has a team of 11 account executives. It has 50 authorized dealers and is aiming to have about 100 authorized dealers by the third quarter 2011.
