LOL is Not Punctuation

It's Not Funny

Johnny Moon
Why do people insist on ending sentences with "LOL" ? For example "I just ate a hamburger LOL!" or "I just did my first survey in 3 months LOL"

The only reasonable answer I can come up with is that people use LOL in this way in order to let other people know that they are mentally deficient.

LOL stands for Laugh Out Loud and yet rarely do I see it used following anything that's even remotely funny. More and more I see it used in place of a where a period would go. This doesn't make any sense. Not even the slightest bit of sense.

The following is true of most LOL typers :

1. They are not bright.
2. They like really bad music. (example: Hollywood Undead)
3. They have an awful sense of humor. (example: Dane Cook)
4. They are bored and thus boring.
5. They are young. And thus have some excuse. Although if you are over 18 and still using LOL please desist immediately.
6. They use text messages on their cell phones a lot.
7. They take a lot of pictures using their cellphones.
8. They spend at least one hour a day on MySpace
9. They haven't jammed out to John Cage in at least a week.

and most importantly...

10. They are almost never actually laughing while they type LOL.

What i find about crap web developers, is that they can't even check their own sites for obvious errors. Such as incorrect syntax which spews HTML code into the main body where a link should be. LOL

Languages change, and in today's internet that change is accelerating.

In the early 1990s "LOL" was used as "Laugh out loud" but since then its meaning has shifted to fill a gap in communicating online, the fact you can't see the other persons face or hear their tone of voice.

Ending a sentence with lol is like a punctuation mark in that it expresses the mood of the sentence, much like a question mark. Even other Emoticons like ":P" are being used for sarcastic sentences where previous attempts in history to introduce such a mark have failed.

Finally, just because you are pedantic enough to insist that every use of lol correspond to the real life act of laughing audibly, doesn't mean you can justifiably throw up a rant about how everyone else must be idiots if they don't follow your rulebook.

Lol is used whenever and where ever people want to use it. My advice is deal with it. I use it often. I am over 18. I listen to good music (if you disbelieve, YOU DON'T LISTEN TO GOOD MUSIC, BWAHAHAHAHA I CAN BE CHILDISH TOO), I am reasonably bright (you disbelieve, meh, my degree is sitting here telling me otherwise), I have a sense of humour that is what it is - I admit it might be different than your's but it does not make it lesser since it is shared by many, I am not bored currently - I have been and will be again and it does not change my use of lol, I don't OWN a cellphone, but no - I've not "jammed out to John Cage"... ever. Not my thing. I am a Rush/Queen/Beatles type person, I tend to go more Klaus Schulze or Eno in my strange techno. Often however I *do* laugh out loud.

All in all - it's a generalization likely based on a dislike of internet speech, especially when overused. Well you my friend use cool too much. Why? Because you're a disenfranchised twenty to forty some w
