I remember the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake because I was at home, with a boyfriend at the time, getting ready to watch the San Francisco Giants play the Oakland A's. There we were sitting on the couch, snacking on on peanuts and chips and dips when the screen on the TV went blank for a minute. We couldn't imagine what happened until the screen came back and their was breaking news that a 6.9 earthquake had just rattled the city.
San Francisco and it's surrounding areas sit on the famous San Andreas fault which has caused many a quake. The Loma Prieta earthquake hit at 5:05pm which is prime time for traffic and people out and about in the city. The earthquake only lasted a little over ten seconds, but it caused a lot of devastation. Sixty -three people were killed in total, 42 of those because of Cypress Creek Viaduct on I-880 in Oakland collapsed (the double decker portion.)
This was the first majopr earthquake ever broadcast live since many people around the country were tuning in to watch the World Series.
Yesteday, October 20th, there was a 4.0 earthquake (and then a 3.9) that jolted the residents in the bay area again almost 22 years to the day of the Loma Prieta quake which happened on October 18, 1989. The recent quakes obviously brought back scary memories. City officials want to make sure that residents are prepared in case disaster strikes.

Thanks for the memories of living in California for 10 years. I remember many a panicked moment. Now we just worry about ice storms on the east coast, although we did have a scare in August.
Aren't they just the creepiest things? I lived in San Dimas, California at the time of the Big Bear and Lander's earthquakes. They were three hours apart and kind of rough. The first one was 6.5 and the second one was 7.3. It was my first experience with earthquakes, and I have never forgot the feeling that it gives you. Very unsettling to say in the least. I recently experienced another one, but this one was centered in Virginia. The 2011, 5.8 earthquake was felt clear up here in Pennsylvania.
I was in Calif. years ago and there was a slight earthquake - I watched my coffee cup slide across the table - then back again! cheers ;)
Nice work.
earthquakes are overrated. we lived in LA and there were little tremors all the time! if you look it up it's pretty startling. the earth is a fluid place!
wow
It would scary to live where there are earthquakes.
