London Fashion Week 2009: What is Estethica?

Albert Chang
The sixth annual Estethica is taking place February 21st-24th, 2009. What exactly is Estethica? Estethica takes place during the London Fashion Week in London, United Kingdom. Estethica is a chance for some of the hottest fashion designers to emerge as new labels and combine fashion and environment. These designers are on the cutting-edge and have a chance to take part in an exhibition that will define what the essence of substantial style is for 2009 and beyond.

London's Estethica started as an initiative to "promote the best in British eco-sustainable fashion". Since then, London's Fashion Week has hosted Estethica for 5 years. Estethica continues to offer awareness regarding international trade and ethical fashion design as well as the eco-evolution of London Fashion Week.

5 of the hottest designers taking part in this event this year are Lunar, Makepiece, Mark Lui, Minna, and Myco Anna.

Lunar is founded by Karen Ter Morshuizen and her husband Paul Harris. Their brand has been striving to educate the South African consumer for over a decade. Lunar can be contacted at Karen@lunarlife.co.za .

Makepiece is manufactured from wool and yarn, resulting in "truly low impact high fashion." Each of their garments are biodegradable. For details, please direct yourself to www.makepiece.co.uk .

Mark Liu, with a website at www.stique.com , has pioneered a technique that minimize "fabric waste during the design and production process." This allows a 15% reduction in fabric waste in pattern cutting.

Minna, who started her label in 2007 upon the foundation of antique lace and beautiful flea market fare, points to Scottish lace as one of the key inspirations to her label. Her entire collection is manufactured in the UK. She emphasizes truly unique pieces in each of her collections.

Myco Anna, conceived in 1995, pledges that it is more than a label: "It's a way of telling the world that even the tiniest detail counts when it comes to fashioning a better planet." Its flagship boutique is located in Quebec City and a new boutique is open in Montreal.

With all of these different new labels showcasing their design and techniques in London, Estethica is an event that continues to push the envelope. Estesthica is sponsored by Monsoon and is co-curated by Orsola de Castro, Filippo Ricci, and The British Fashion Council.

  • at estethica, sustainable clothing action plan lau2/20/2009

the showcase has really blossomed over the years, growing from 13 to 37 designers..

it now definitely is a, if not the, leading event in ethical fashion in the UK with the Minister for Sustainable Development choosing to launch his Sustainable Clothing Action Plan at estethica.

it doesn't seem like any of the designers at the showcase are part of his plan though, with the likes of M&S, Sainsbury and Oxfam taking centre stage.
