The UK system for a bachelor's degree differs from the U.S. in that it does not require any general education courses. The student takes classes only in their major, hence, the program is completed in three years, rather than four. For example: the UOL degree in German requires intensive instruction in the German language and does not deflect from that path except for a few courses in related German literature.
The grading system is also different as the Brits are not fond of multiple choice. All questions are in essay format, and there are no quizzes or random testing, just a mid term and a final. These exams are scheduled with a proctor to verify the student's identity, and may be conveniently taken at a public library.
The UOL website addresses the admissions system using the UK and western European standards of "A" and "O" level coursework. Those levels are not employed in the U.S., and our equivalent is a high school or GED diploma. If the university has any questions about international grading systems, the application is handed over to the Special Admission Panel for evaluation, who will work on the applicant's behalf to gain access to the university.
Registration is done online with a credit card or by mail with a bank check. Once payment is received, the books are mailed from London with an estimated delivery time of 10 to 14 days. The student may begin studies at any time of the year, and take up to 5 years to complete the undergraduate degree. The University of London also offers a M.A. degree, but the student must have obtained an undergraduate degree from them first.
Tuition for the entire degree is only 2800 pound sterling, or approximately $4100, and it may be paid by the course, rather than per year. The annual fee is about $1366, so, if the student wants to break the year into quarters, that's about $341 paid four times a year, or to budget your money, save $113 a month for school.
Undergraduate majors offered include: accounting, business administration, classical studies, divinity, economics, English, French, geography, German, history, information systems, Italian, law (British and International), management, math, philosophy, politics (British and International), sociology, Spanish, and theology. Math and science courses are only required in science-related fields.
With the University of London's External Degree Program, you will finish in record time, pay a fraction of American tuition fees, study on your own timeline, enjoy a pay-as-you-go program, disregard general education requirements, dismiss the math class, and graduate from one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
