Long Beds for Tall Men: Gardening for Children

According to Height Analyzer, 93% of men in the US are between 5' 3" and 6' 2", and my husband, being 6' 9" is in the top .5% for height in the US. Most things are made for much shorter people, and a lot of times he is mildly uncomfortable and doesn't seem to even notice that his seat is too low or when he has to duck to get through a door.

When we first brought our furniture together he had a twin (no joke) bed with a nice but kitschy frame with a headboard but no foot board. I had a queen size bed with a frame that I like the look of, but which had a head and a foot board.

I vetoed the prospect of putting two adults, one of which is quite tall, and a cat in a twin size bed, and did not appreciate his attachment to this bed. So we set up my queen size bed in our room. I assumed that this would give him more leg room because, of course, the bed was bigger.

After a while I noticed that his feet were pressed firmly against the footboard as he slept, and he looked quite uncomfortable. After looking into it, we found that a king size bed is no longer than a queen.

We ended up dismantling the bed and taking the foot off. For a few years we have lived like this, with Aaron's feet hanging off the end of the bed. I can't imagine sleeping like this, so it makes me feel bad for him. He says he has had to sleep like this since he was 12, so it doesn't bother him. But it seems wrong to me. We both have assumed that we would just have to sleep like this indefinitely.

Recently Aaron heard about the California King - it's the same width as a regular king size bed but 6 inches longer! Of course they take up a huge amount of floor space and would not make sense for most people, but for us it would be worth it. They are priced as luxury items - anywhere from $800 to over $4000. If you or your bed-mate are over the average height, and have feet hanging off the end of the bed like we do, this is probably worth the expense.

With populations getting taller and taller, hopefully a California (as in extra long) Queen will come out next.

I just want to thank you. I am a tall guy as well and have been looking for a comfortable way to sleep for a while. Thank you for sharing this with the other .5%
