Long Distance Relationship Survival Tips

A Quick Guide

It's hard to be in a long distance relationship. No one will ever tell you anything else. If you've met that special someone but they're far away from you, here are some ways to make it work.

Talk often - If your cell plan isn't unlimited, this would be a good time to look into that. You'll want to talk all the time, and it'll be the only way to keep up with each other, so make sure you make that commitment. A lot of effort goes into relationships, and when they're long distance that makes it even harder. Try to talk once a day if you can; at least a few times a week otherwise. You can also e-mail and chat online. Sometimes you might even be able to schedule yourselves a phone call during a TV show or movie so it can be like you're watching them together.

Be open - There is a lot of compromising involved in being in a long distance relationship. You might not have the time to talk, the money to visit. It's a lot of work, and you're going to have to accept that it isn't always going to be fun. If your significant other is worth it, though, you'll deal. Share your thoughts about your day, your worries about the relationship. The only way to keep communication open is by continuing to use it.

Visit - Try to see each other when you can. If that involves planes, then you should join a frequent flier program and try to always use the same airline. You can find less expensive tickets on sites like Travelocity, but sometimes you won't find them for the same airline. If you can drive, that's great! Take a road trip as much as you can. It's always a nice feeling to finally gt to see the person you're in a long distance relationship with.

Trust - It's very important to trust your partner in a long distance relationship. You won't be there all the time, you can't know what they're always doing - but the same applies to you. If you don't trust each other, that long distance relationship is going to be a short term relationship.

Make plans - You're not going to want this to be a permanent situation. In your long distance relationship, one of the compromises you'll have to make is that one of you is going to have to move. Maybe even both of you. That can be really hard on a person, which is why you really need to build a strong foundation for your relationship before it happens.
