Long distance relationships: What you should know about surviving them
Relationships are hard work. They become even harder when there is a great distance between the couple. It becomes a difficult struggle to keep the love alive and strong, but sometimes time apart makes the heart grow fonder.
Are you in a relationship with someone who lives states away or a few short hours? It takes hard work and commitment to make any courtship work. But it can happen.
Here are some tips to making any relationship work.
Phone calls
Phone calls can be expensive, but hearing the person's voice keeps you connected. It allows it to feel as if the person is right there with you, even though they are not. Limit your phone calls if they are becoming too expensive. Just do not completely cut them out.
Email/Letters
Email correspondence is instant delivery. It saves money, quite a bit actually. Email allows the communication to stay open. Communication is the key to any relationship surviving, especially long distance ones.
Skype
Skype is an instant messenger service that allows you to view and talk to other people. This is a great tool for couples and families to stay connected. Skype is free to join and use. It brings together people who are separated by miles and miles.
Visits
Visits are very important for any long distance relationship to work. Without these, a long distance relationship is hard to survive. Visits sometimes become few due to busy schedules and how much they cost. The economy plays a big part in why relationships do not make it through a long distance trial.
Support group
Support groups are not as common, but this doesn't mean you can't join one. You can create your own to help others who are in the same boat. A support group will give you a shoulder to lean on.
Friends and family
Spending time with friends and family will help ease the pain of not being with the one you love. Friends and family will give guidance and love. They will be there for you no matter what the situation may be.
Long distance is never easy. Commitment on both parts is required for it to work. If it is meant to be, no distance will stand in the way. Don't give up. Everything will work in the end.
