Long Distance Relationships. Are They Worth It?

Karl Withakay
These days, with the Internet, long distance relationships are pretty common. No more are we limited to at fifty mile radius when it comes to finding someone we are compatible with. We have the entire planet to choose from. However, too often we get caught up in our emotions and we don't often make good decisions when it comes to a long distance relationship. I'll give you some things to consider before you fall in love with someone hundreds or thousands of miles away.

Where Is It Going?

Is this woman or man that you're in a long distance relationship with Mr or Mrs Right? If so, there are a few things you should have gone over with her or him before you fell head over heels.

Moving

OK. You live in New York and your new love lives in California. Are you going to move to California to be with them? Is your new love going to move to New York to be with you? What if your new love has a decent career where they live or owns a home? What if you have a dream job and own a home where you live. These kind of things can complicate things if you two want to get married and live together.

Children

Do you have children living with you? Is your new love a custodial parent of a child or children? This could throw a wrench in the fly wheel of a budding long distance relationship. Laws are different in every state but in most states, it is unlawful to remove your children from their state of residence to go and live somewhere else with you. If you do, a warrant for your arrest can be issued on behalf of the other parent of the child.

Does Your New Love Live Overseas?

If your new love lives overseas or in Canada or Mexico, you moving to them or them moving to you can be difficult. Every country has their own immigration requirements. Some are more picky than others. The United States of America is not the only country with an illegal immigration problem. You need to closely examine the immigration laws for the country you intend to move to if you intend to move.

Are You Ready To Leave?

You may hate where you live but are you really ready to leave and move thousands or hundreds of miles away? Are you ready to move away from your friends and your family? Are you ready to move to a new place where you know your spouse or your fiance ONLY? This can be very difficult for some people.

I'm not saying that a long distance relationship cannot work. I'm from New York State, my wife is from Utah. I fell in love with her, came to Utah for the holidays in 2005 and never went back. I married her a year later. There are success stories but a long distance relationship does not come without challenges that are exclusive to long distance relationships.
