Try brown rice instead of a baked potato with butter and sour cream. At Arby's restaurants, this side dish has 500 calories and is high in saturated fat. Alternatively, you could substitute rice instead of french fries. There are 300 calories in a small order of french fries at McDonald's. The caloric and healthy difference is tasty and well worth it.

In addition to B vitamins and iron (included in the fifteen different vitamins and minerals), one cup of brown rice is low in fat, highly digestible and contains only 216 calories per serving. It even has some antioxidants in it. And if you are indeed counting calories this can only help you and have a two fold positive advantage.

If you are on a budget brown rice is a good food choice. It is economical and has a good shelf life. It is a good item to consider buying in larger amounts. You can buy it in bags of ten pounds or more. Many chain supermarkets carry bigger sizes of rice today and there are always the bulk warehouses such as Sam's Club.
