Long Haired Ladies and Hair Assassins

Why Do People Always Want Me to Cut My Hair?

Kelly Spies
I'm a member of the Long Haired Ladies League. My hair hangs down to about the middle of my butt; or rather it did about a month ago before I trimmed three inches off the bottom of it.

There are thousands of Long Haired Ladies roaming the world and most of us have experienced receiving the same reactions from other people; total strangers most of the time.

People that come across us tend to want to touch it, hold it, brush it, smooth it, pet it, stare at it, ask about it, launch things into it and try to catch it in doors, car windows and any other open/closable device that's handy.

Long hair also causes some people to suffer involuntary horror at the idea of us not cutting our hair. The Hair Assassins of the world barrage us with suggestions that we should go get scalped. They lurk around corners waiting for opportune moments to interject the topic of you cutting your hair into the conversation. Hair Assassins become obsessed with us getting new short hair styles.

Hair Assassins are usually one of two groups. 1. Assassin has never had long hair and is fascinated with seeing someone cut off their hair for mere curiosity sake. 2. Assassin is plagued with evil thoughts and finds immense pleasure in the chopping off of someone's hair, much like Elizabeth Bathory bathed in virgin maiden's blood to stay young.

The first group of Assassins isn't intending to cause grief or discomfort in the long haired one, they just can't help themselves. Most of them have been cutting their hair for as long as they can remember. To them it almost seems un-natural to not cut your hair.

The second group of Assassins is known to giggle gleefully when they suggest you cut your hair. They select hair styles they think would look good on you, all of them short, and set out to show them to you. They can't wait for the moment you decided to chop it all off and they sincerely hope they get to be there to see it when it happens.

Style and design shows that give make-overs to women almost always go straight for the scissors, especially when the woman in question shows up with long silky locks. I have seen them get downright nasty when a long haired lady protests cutting off her hair and they eventually pressure her into doing it.

There seems to be a division amongst women (and men for that matter) who have long and short hair. Women with short hair have no problem taking scissors to their hair and quite frankly do it a lot while women with long hair tend to be hard pressed to cut more than a quarter of an inch off the bottom without crying.

Ever since the internet became the huge phenomenon that it has become, women with long hair have banded together to support each other. I call them the long haired ladies league. There are forums and articles galore that explain everything from how to grow your long to how to take care of long hair to how to dye long hair and braid it up medieval style.

Somehow women have accepted that at a certain age they should cut their hair to some publicly proclaimed acceptable length. Mom's think they have to cut it off to care for their children easier, older women think having long hair is too young looking and young girls think chopping it all off is a rebellious way of having control. What a crock of crap.

Everyone has a preference on how long or short their hair is and that's perfectly fine but those of us that chose not to get scalped would simply like to be left alone about it.

So the next time you are prompted to tell a long haired lady she should cut off her hair because she'd look so cute with short hair, think again, mind your own damn business and admire from afar.

...and long hair takes less time to style in the morning, contrary to what our short-haired counterparts think. For those rare bad hair days - we also have the ponytail option!

Yes, I agree long hair looks nice, definitely! I have long hair too, and I find it really fun to make my hair into different styles. I think your hair looks fantastic, Kelly!!! People always say, "Oh, how beautiful! I just can't imagine having such long hair! What a job!!" But it isn't like that. It's actually fun... keep up the good hair, it's cool!

I have long hair too--just about to my butt. I've been letting it grow because when I was younger it would not. I don't belong to a group or forum because of it, I'm just proud to have it.

I have long hair, but no one has ever wanted to touch it or anything. My youngest has hair past her diaper and I will never cut it. No one says anything to her about it except that they like it.

    Nice article though.

Yeah what you said applies to men as well. I'm over 40 and my mother still can't say anything to me without prefacing it with, "You could use a haircut." And it doesn't matter if it's already short, it's never short enough.

Kelly, you are so right. I was told by at least 3 people in the last year I need to cut my hair short because I'm over 50. What a crock of crap, as you say.

Oh my gosh! This article is so true. I am also a member of the long haired ladies league. I cut my hair about a foot a year ago and my hair is still to my waist. But I am so tired of people telling me to cut my hair because I'm in my thirties, or because they say "You'll look better." Why don't they just leave us alone? I think a lot of it is jealousy. I have healthy long hair and I'm going to keep it that way forever!

AMEN!! It is my opinion that EVERYBODY looks better with long hair. Oh, by the way, up until August, 2001, MY hair was even longer than yours: I only cut it off because after 2 decades of looking like Gregg Allman, I got tired of taking care of it (I experienced every problem you described above, including a rather embarrassing one that I don't care to discuss!!) CHEERS!
