Residents of Downtown Brooklyn can be proud of the fact that a local college was included in the Daily Beast's Safest Colleges List. Long Island University's Downtown Brooklyn campus ranked as the third safest college in the country.

Research to see how each school measured up was quite extensive. According to the Daily Beast, the website collected information from over 13,000 colleges and had at least 50 different types of criteria to create the list. They factored in the severity of different types of crimes that occurred within the past two years.

Data was analyzed for colleges with campus housing and 6,000 or more students. The final rankings were based on crime statistics for incidents on campus and nearby from local FBI data and the U.S. Department of Education.
