Long Live the King

Gary Malmberg
LONG LIVE THE KING

was a time not long ago, lived our handsome king
a life of Daily freedom
Reality was a house of cards
the demons of his mind ate at him
a Nightly foray into the depths of his soul
an after hours feeding frenzy in the hash house of hell
una fiesta de diablos
a midnight snack of anxiety, regret and weakness
carte blanche on the king“s tab
his achilles heel manifested in the dark
shadowed by Day

for all his freedom,
he has his fear
his fiefdom, in fact a feardom
moat waters slowly burned away by the fires of Night
the paper castle in ashes
the drawbridge
so closely guarded from you
opens souly for my dark horses
before falling to the abyss

with the sun comes a new castle to carry the Day
sadly, each morn the moat more shallow
the castle less secure
the drawbridge hardened
a pitiful (he asks not for pity) degradation
of body and spirit
to the spirits
yet saved by the Spirit

it is not that the king lacks
loving family
loyal friends
prescient advisers
they are on call each Day
to lighten his burden

the king was strong and brave and intelligent
those traits were proven many times over
in high stake battles with evil realms
countering contentious kings-in-waiting

vultures

hovering in the blackness
set to swoop upon the fall
the battles
at times
truly life and death
loss of life preferred to loss of honor

Night stood vulnerable
the black knight haunted the king
in his period of least protection
no sandman, he
no fairy tale, either.
With unGodly strength and determination
the Knight accepted the best the king had to offer
and spit it back in his face
never to lose
yet, never on earth to win
this devil of the dark

the evils have lessened
thanks to the true King
the worldly king survives
Night to Knight
Day to Dios.

long live the king
long live the King
