Long Weekend Break Ideas

Logan McCall
Whether you have a long weekend due to a federal holiday or are just taking a day off, three days is enough time squeeze in a great little vacation. Here's a few ideas to get you started.

Small Town Bed and Breakfasts

In nearly every region of the United States, it is a relatively short drive from the city to the small towns that dot the country side. One great long weekend break idea is to explore a small town that looks interesting and is within driving distance. Most little towns that have enough to see to merit a long weekend stay also have one or more bed and breakfasts that make for an ideal base of operations. The best part is that a long weekend break at a small town bed and breakfast has none of the pressures of a vacation in a city or tourist spot. You can simply take your time and ask the lodging owner's recommend sites for seeing. For a listing of over 400 of the more distinguished bed and breakfasts in North America, visit Select Registry.

Martha's Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard, located just off Cape Cod, New England, is one of the more well known locations that the wealthy vacation. If you're not from that world, make an anthropological expedition into the heart of New English elitism with a long weekend break at Martha's Vineyard. Be aware that you'll need to do some elbow rubbing in order to be accepted as one of the native inhabitants, as most of the socializing and entertaining occurs at private homes rather than public areas. Men in your party should consider carrying a smoking pipe and use a number of hair products, while the women need to keep their eyebrows raised as if in a state of perpetual shock (or botox paralysis). Teenagers must carry with them a cloud of disaffected ennui (in other words, just be themselves). Enjoy the lobster.

Tour of Local Minor League Baseball

A cool idea for sports fans is to take a long weekend break tour of the local minor league baseball teams in your region. With a little luck and some extra driving, you should be able to find some sort of ball game going on for each day of your long weekend. To make it a little more interesting, do a little research before you head out to learn how the teams are doing, who their best players are and maybe a little bit of information about the stadiums and towns themselves. Some photography or souvenirs is a great way to feel like you're coming home with something at the end of your long weekend break. The rest of the trip can be spent taking in whatever other sights strike your party's fancy.

Photography Expedition

With the affordability of high quality cameras to the average consumer, making a photography expedition out of a long weekend break is a great idea. Simply get together your shutterbug pals or have the family empty out their camera's memory cards and pick a spot to go. If heading for an urban area, consider bringing along a guide book for important architecture, statues or off the beaten path sites. On the other hand, some field identification books can add a whole different level to the experience if you are out for wildlife photography of plants and animals. If it's a family expedition, assembling the best pictures into a slide show or DVD is a great way to wrap up your long weekend break.

Mountain Retreat

If work or life in general is starting to feel way more complicated than it could possibly really be, maybe it's time to head to the hills for a long weekend break at a mountain retreat. There's something about the mountain air and forest seclusion that puts all of the complications of daily life back in perspective. Anywhere there's hills, there's cabins for rent, often at a great price. Other options range from staying at a luxury lodge to roughing it in the backcountry.
