Long Weekend Break for Summer

Logan McCall
Houseboat Rental

For a memorable long weekend getaway, renting a houseboat is a vacation like no other. Nearly all of the largest lakes in the United States and Canada have houseboats for rent, either for the weekend or by the week, with prices varying based on the size and condition of the craft. For example, houseboating.org lists a handful of houseboats available for rent at Lake Norris, Tennessee. At the low end, a 60' houseboat is available during the summer months at a rate of $1200 to $1800. The boat comes with accommodations for 4-6 people, central air conditioning, gas grill and other amenities.

Canoe Trip

Whether it is a lazy paddle down a meandering river or an adrenaline pumping rush through white water rapids, the summer is a great time of the year for a canoe trip over a long weekend break, provided that you can beat the heat. Based in Lake Clear, New York, St. Regis Canoe Outfitters offers a number of 2-3 guided and unguided canoeing excursions. If you own your own canoe, long weekend break trips start at $279, but canoes are available for rent at an additional $70-80. The outfitters provide the guide, logistics and all of the food and cooking gear. For a full list of the canoeing excursions available this year, visit St. Regis Canoe Outfitters.

Atlantic City Getaway

For a more populated long weekend break, Atlantic City, New Jersey is a classic summertime destination. Due to the gambling industry, there are often some great lodging packages available. Tropicana Casino and Resort is currently offering "Night of Laughs" Comedy Package that includes accommodation for two, a couple of free drinks and tickets to the Comedy Stop Comedy Club at a two night rate of $147 per person.

Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is a popular modern resort town along the Atlantic Ocean that draws most of its visitors from Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. It's popular for good reason, with its quirky and youthful perspective and eclectic mix of both visitors and locals. AARP listed Rehoboth as one of the best places to retire, and Reader's Digest has listed the boardwalk as the best in America. Rehoboth Beach also has a strong gay and lesbian tourist draw, especially to the stretch of coast called Poodle Beach.

World's Largest Yard Sale

Treasure hunters, antique aficionados and pack rats alike will love a long weekend break exploring the World's Largest Yard Sale lining US127 from western Ohio to Gadsden, Alabama. The spectacle stretches some 654 miles of booth after tent after booth of just about every line of merchandise that you can imagine. Regardless of what section that you choose to explore, there are lodging opportunities all along the way, including bed and breakfasts, guest houses, cabins, hotels and camping. I used to go up to Atlantic City and Rehoboth Beach a lot when I lived in DC. Never heard of that big yard sale though...sounds good!
