Longing in the Night

Mandy Kaye
I awaken in the early night
I hear you call to me from the other room
I know it's not real
but I softly whisper a reply
In hope, that miles
have not separated our hearts
I feel reassured
As our voices echo down the hall

I roll over in my sleep
And for an instant I feel you near
I open my eyes
And realize
It's just the pillow
that has held onto your scent
I breathe in slowly
As if not to waste it

The morning brings an unusual emptiness
But I still feel you here
I taste you when I sip at my coffee
I blink in the shower and remember your body
I reach for the phone
But before I dial your number
There you are
Like you never left at all
