Look Out for New Children's Book Kindergarten Colors

Vicki Gamble
If you are looking for an inspiring children's book that teaches diversity and differences in families, then Kindergarten Colors is the book for you. There are many children's books out there, but few touch on interracial families. The fact is that interracial families are becoming more and more common. Families that have adopted children, single parent families and families in which children live with other relatives also top the list of "out of the norm" families. The question is, are there any normal families anymore? What can you call normal in this day and age?

Kindergarten Colors is a wonderful story about a little girl named Sydney who is starting her first day of Kindergarten. Her only love is coloring, and to her delight, after arriving at school she quickly finds out that her first assignment is to color a picture of her family. As she happily begins her artwork, another student notices that she is coloring her family in different colors. As the story progresses, not only do her classmates learn that Sydney's family is different from theirs, but they too, soon learn that their own families may not be quite as typical as they think.

In the story, you will read about Sydney's interracial family. Her mother is Caucasian and her father is African American. Sydney and her brother are the perfect combination of the two, even though they have different skin tones from each other. The story not only shows that her family has many colors, but displays the many colors of Crayola's multicultural crayons too. And for those of you that did not know Crayola had multicultural crayons, they are wonderful. Some of the colors are terra cotta, mahogany and sandy tan. The colors are meant to express the various skin tones that we all have. With that being said, even Crayola realizes that families are all diverse. Kindergarten Colors is an excellent book for children and parents. It would make a great addition to any preschool or school library as well.
