One of a Kind is located in the Wallhaven District of Akron, on Hawkins Ave, right in the same building as a Circle K (formerly a Citgo). Upon entering, we were greeted by not one, but many cats wandering about the store. Standing inside you wouldn't know it was a rescue shelter at all. The area is clean, and has an atmosphere much more akin to a pet store than a shelter. There were enclosed areas with puppies, and cages of kitties (apparently there's a limit to how many can wander about).
I received all the assistance I could ever ask for. Not only did I find the perfect puppy, but I was given ample instructions on how to raise the puppy, and asked to call if I had any trouble. As a first time pet owner, this was incredibly reassuring. I was also able to buy a collar and bag of food (that she had already been on) from the shop, as they also sell a variety of doggie necessities-as well as some fun novelties.
I think the greatest aspect of this shelter is how well the animals are cared for. The employees gave the dogs and cats plenty of affection and care while I was there. They were eager to find homes for all of the little boys and girls, and were so genuine. I've never met a teenage pet store employee that expressed such honest care for how their animals were treated. One of a Kind does not euthanize any dogs or cats, ever. So the animals remain in a safe environment.
So if you live in or around the Akron area and are looking to adopt a pet, please look at the pound first. One of a Kind Pets finds many of its dogs and cats there, as they are in danger of euthanasia. If you cant stand the thought of going to the pound, however, and are still looking around, try One of a Kind. I had a wonderful experience adopting from them. The costs are very reasonable, especially considering the clinical services they provide prior to the animals going home. You can also feel great that you're providing another chance, along with care and affection, to the next addition to your family.
