Looking After Copper Goods

Copper is generally used for electrical wiring, because of its good conductivity. For the same reason,it is used for making cooking utensils, kettles and ornaments. After being exposed to open air, heat and water, copper loses it's shine and develops a verdigris around it. It then does not remain suitable for cooking purposes. Here are some tips to keep your copper goods in good condition at all times of the year.
  • Wash all copper utensils including saucepans in a solution of detergent and water. For stubborn stains ,you may need to soak them for a couple of hours. Remove, rise with running water and dry immediately.
  • Keep the exterior of your cooking utensils free from any cooking residues and dirt, else they'll burn when heated again and will then be difficult to remove and make the utensil less efficient. Use fine steel wool to clear any such residues.
  • To remove corrosion ,vinegar or lemon juice with salt works perfect. Just rub on the mixture, rinse and dry.
  • To clean any ornaments, dip a small brush in lemon juice and brush off thoroughly. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
  • Use proprietary copper or metal cleaners for small ornaments. Polish with a soft lint-free cloth after wards.
Use these tips to clean your copper goods every 3-4 months and they'll retain their shine and color.
