Looking for a Date on Valentine's Day

Charles Bruce-Brown
The typically ideal Valentine's Day would go something like this. A couple who are very much in love get together for a perfectly planned and executed Valentine's Day, whatever their personal interests and romantic inclinations may be. Unfortunately for a lot of people when Valentine's Day rolls around they are either not involved in a relationship or they are newly involved in a relationship and are unsure how to approach the celebration of Valentine's Day, as they do not know at what level of feeling their new partner is and if that partner would even be interested in celebrating the day or might have alternate plans. This can be an extremely awkward situation for one or both partners and needs to be handled very carefully.

In the case of a new relationship one might feel awkward at the thought of asking your new partner to celebrate Valentine's Day with you. Something to remember is that even if the answer is no this is not necessarily an indication that your relationship is in trouble or that your partner is not as interested in you as you are in them. Many people try to prepare in advance for Valentine's Day, especially someone that is single, and they may have already made plans with their friends that they do not feel comfortable cancelling. Others may have an alternate point of view and see Valentine's Day as a commercial celebration and choose not to celebrate at all. The most important thing is to communicate your feelings and try not to let your feelings be hurt if your new partner does not want to celebrate Valentine's Day with you.

For the individual that is single or whose new partner wishes not to celebrate, getting together with friends is often a great way to recognize the day and keep yourself from spending this time alone, which is often a time when one can feel bad about themselves if they are not celebrating the day in the stereotypical fashion. Realize that this is not the only Valentine's Day that you will ever experience and that when the time is right you will be with your partner celebrating together. You may also wish to spend the time alone and treat yourself to something special to show your own love and appreciation for yourself. Especially if you are single by choice and are comfortable being single you might want to use this time to celebrate your freedom and the opportunity to lavish a little extra attention on yourself. Raise a glass of bubbly and celebrate all of the things that make you unique and special!
