Looking for Formal Maternity Wear? Use These Ideas to Create an Inexpensive Formal Maternity Outfit

Emily Harmon
When I was invited to an arts fundraising gala at over 36 weeks pregnant, I was anxious to go, but also a bit nervous. What on earth was I going to wear? Finding any maternity clothing can be a challenge but finding formal maternity clothing....that seemed like it may be impossible. Fortunately there are some ways to find and create formal maternity clothing without spending a fortune. Look and feel your best at those formal events with these ideas for formal maternity clothing.

Maxi Dresses. Maxi dresses, found easily at online and in-store maternity places, are a great item that can easily be transformed into formal wear for a pregnant woman. Maxi dresses are simply long dresses meant to drape comfortably over a pregnant belly. These super simple dresses can be formalized in a number of ways. First of all a fancy beaded cardigan can be added. The cardigan does not need to be a maternity cardigan so shop your normal stores for this piece. Formal jewelry and some nice comfortable heels complete this formal maternity look. Maxi dresses are inexpensive and you will be able to wear your dress other places after the formal event.

Mini Dresses with Leggings. Mini dresses, short dresses often found in the juniors section of major department stores, can create a formal look for a pregnant woman. No one thinks to look in the junior's department when looking for maternity wear but many of the current styles are loose and flowy and work perfectly over a pregnant belly. These cute mini dresses become a formal maternity top when placed over black leggings. Look for a fancy mini dress that comes over your belly. Then shop your favorite maternity store for black leggings. Add formal jewelry and shoes and your formal maternity look is complete.

Black, black, black! Just about anything in black can be transformed to look formal with the right accessories. Search your current maternity wardrobe for a black skirt and black shirt of just about any kind. Add some flashy accessories such as a beaded clutch, a luxurious scarf, and some huge rhinestone earrings. Bright colored shoes would also add to the formal, but unique look of a totally black formal maternity outfit. Before you go out and spend a fortune on a one time formal maternity outfit, check your own closet for a black ensemble that you can turn into formal maternity wear.

Borrow! As a final way to find formal maternity clothing, don't forget to ask your friends! Anyone you know who has been pregnant may have a formal maternity outfit stashed away somewhere. Who knows? Perhaps a friend or coworker had to buy a formal maternity outfit during her pregnancy and she still owns it. The outfit may have even only been worn once or twice. Don't feel shy soliciting a borrowed formal maternity outfit. Anyone you know who has one to offer will be happy to oblige.

If you are facing the dilemma of needing a formal maternity outfit try these suggestions. You'll be thrilled to have saved quite a bit of money on this one time outfit, and you will look like a fabulous pregnant woman at your formal event.

I love the idea of the mini dress over leggings. I made the mistake of getting rid of my maternity clothes after I my daughter was born 4 years ago, and now I'm expecting again and need something formal to wear. Thanks for the tips!
