Looking Forward to 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' Season Two

COMMENTARY | Having decided, at least for now, not to run for president, Sarah Palin has some time to fill between her political causes and her duties on Fox News. So television viewers are going to be gifted with a second season of "Sarah Palin's Alaska," according to Big Hollywood.

Some media outlets have falsely reported that the Palins were shopping around a reality show based on Todd Palin, focusing on his participation in long-distance snowmobile races. The media had also reported, falsely and with an unbecoming sense of glee, that the Palins were having trouble selling the show.

In fact Mark Burnett, the producer of season one, is still in talks with TLC to run the second season. The episodes would be shot during the summer and would air after the 2012 election.

Season One of "Sarah Palin's Alaska" was remarkably successful, pulling in 5 million viewers for the premiere episode. The series depicted the Palin family having a number of adventures around Alaska. One episode showed the Palins salmon fishing. Another episode depicted a caribou hunt near the Arctic Circle that roused the ire, of among other people, Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.

Of course the funniest episode showed Kate Gosselin going camping with her large brood with the Palins and then kind of wishing she hadn't. She stood by the fire shivering in the cold and wet complaining while Todd went off to fish and Palin's father rolled his eyes. Her kids had a lot of fun, though.

The only thing that has been revealed about Season Two is that the Todd Palin snowmobile race will be one of the episodes.

"Sarah Palin's Alaska" was something that one could enjoy even if one is not a political supporter of Palin's. Too much of reality TV focuses on dysfunction and people who are famous for being famous. Not this series. The Palins are almost indescribably wholesome and normal for a group of people living on one of Earth's last frontiers. Even if Palin were not the most famous female politician in America -- perhaps the world -- the series would be fun to watch.

It's too bad the Palin is not running. But another season of her Alaska series is a pretty good consolation prize.
