Looking into the Son

Two Things We Can't Live Without...the Sun, and the Son

Lori Duncan
When you sit down and really ponder what an amazing universe we live in, it can truly bring you to tears. The sky is full of wonders, day and night. To think that our moon dictates the tides is a miracle in itself. But factor in what would happen if the moon went away, so would life on earth, as we know it. God keeps the moon in place for our survival. A mass of lifeless gray dirt plays such a phenomenal role in earth's existence, yet we take it for granted. Genesis 1:16 (NIV) God made two great lights-the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

The marvelous animals of this earth: Genesis 1:25 (WEB) God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.

I've been watching several programs about animals from all over the world. There was no limit to God's imagination when He designed the creatures that roam this earth. From the peculiar marsupials of Australia, to the heartwarming "march of the penguins," it seems God made each one with a plan. But more profound is how He designed each of us with a plan. That is to be a part of His royal family and brothers and sisters to His perfect Son, Jesus Christ.

Every time I scoop up a handful of sand, I try to imagine just where each of those grains came from. Within that sand, we find a wonderful story of life, death, survival, struggle, rebirth and miracles. A lot of us take sand for granted, but to me, it reminds me how precious life is, and how fortunate and blessed we are by such a creative and giving Lord. A handful of sand may contain particles of silica, quartz, lava, shellfish, bones and coral. Colors can range from pink to green to black. Some of it hurts your feet, some of it feels like you're walking on baby powder. God is so cool! Psalm 139:17-18b, "How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!"

I tend to see so many correlations within the Word, and the world we live in. Although this is a temporary state of our existence, God has made the universe for our pleasure as well. A brilliant mind may grasp the wonders of the world. But a soul saved by grace is thankful for it. I shudder when I hear so-called theologians professing their "take" on what God's plan holds for our eternity. They use so much science and philosophy to explain their theories, as if they were God's spokesmen. "If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become foolish that he may become wise" 1 Cor. 3:18.The sun amazes me, and the Son amazes me! The sun is a life-giving light; the Son is our "lifesaving light"! The sun shatters the darkness and warms the earth; the Son shatters the darkness of sin, and warms the heart. The sun creates life, without it humanity, plants and the animals would not survive; the Son saves our lives, without Him we die eternally. The sun is a gift to the earth by God, who created it; the Son is a gift to the earth by His Father, God, Who remains with us and has always been with us. The sun dries up the clouds and puts an end to the storms, without it, the earth would end in a cold, dark winter for eternity; the Son ends the storms of our lives and brings hope to a dying world. Without Him, we have no hope. But we have Him, and we know that with Him, we will live forever. "For God so loved the world, that he gave us his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16.
