Looking Perfect for Special Occasions and Events

Pat Jacobs
For attending an Afternoon Wedding, you want to go for semi-formal wear ( No long, ornate looks or cocktail dresses-too overdone for daytime). Put on a classic suit, dressed-up separates or a short, simple dress. Avoid glittery, fancy evening bags and shoes. Pair your outfit with simple high heels or pumps (if it's spring or summer, you can wear sandals trendy jewelry and a small purse (handbag).

Your best choice for a Job Interview is always a nicely tailored suit (ensemble). Consider the color carefully; you don't want anything that's brazen bold, like lime green or hot pink (You wouldn't want the suit competing for attention with yourself, would you?). Choose from the classic shades of black, brown, camel, navy, cream or olive. Accessorize the outfit with one or a few pieces of pretty, understated jewelry.

What you would wear to an office would also be suitable at a PTA Meeting. Now you can use your own judgement here, but if you stick to the basics, you'll always be dressed appropriately. A good classic choice is a regular or turtleneck sweater and skirt combo. A blouse and tailored pants are also good. What you can do to "liven" up your outfit a bit is to carry a fun-looking handbag/purse (not vulgar!) and some playful earrings (if you wear them).

When dressing for a Funeral, keep in mind that this is one event where you DO NOT want to look flashy (nor trashy!). But now this doesn't mean you have to be totally covered in black (It's still an appropriate color to wear, however). These days, there's a range of colors that are OK to wear for somber occasions-Gray, Brown, Navy or Camel. Just be sure that the color you wear is sedate.
And of course, no micro-mini skirts or dresses; an outfit that falls below the knee, paired with a simple necklace or earrings will work beautifully.

Here's what to wear to three truly formal events:

BLACK-TIE-This will most likely take place in the evening, so a floor-length gown is the way to go. Wear strappy sandals (If it's warm enough) or heels/pumps and a small, decorative or matching handbag/purse.

BLACK-TIE OPTIONAL-You have the option of dressing formally or a bit more casually. If it's a daytime function, you can wear a suit or three-quarter length dress. For an evening one, wear a cocktail or long dress.

WHITE-TIE-These events are more formal than black-tie. Wear a strapless or sleeveless floor-length gown, with dressy shoes and a small handbag (A beaded one, if possible). If you choose, wear a pair of long gloves for an even more dramatic effect!
