Looking Up

Poetic Passes at Prescription Glasses

Linda Ann Nickerson

"A good laugh is sunshine in a house."
William Makepeace Thackeray
(1811 - 1863)

I have an extra set of eyes
I never had before,
For something caught me by surprise
When I was thirty-four.

My lamp grew misty; then it dimmed.
It happened overnight.
From miles of typeface, quickly skimmed
Without an oversight.

The printed word, my lifelong wage,
Was my undoing too.
I crafted visions on the page
Until my vision flew.

Corrective lenses helped me not,
I realized to my dread.
But how my glasses hit the spot,
While parked atop my head.

A stylish spectacle perplexed,
Despite my eyes' despair.
I cannot find my missing specs
With two eyes in my hair!

I have searched all over the house for my glasses, while wearing them atop my head. My kids love to tease about this. ;-)

This happened to me and I spent an hour looking for my glasses before I realized....yes, I did. I had to laugh when I read your poem.
