Looking at the World of Music Festivals

John Vann
Nearly all of us are have heard of the original Woodstock, which took place in the summer of 1969 - and some of us may have even attended the original festival, or perhaps one of its later reincarnations. But what many don't realize, however, is that there is a whole world dedicated to keeping the spirit of the original Woodstock alive; and these music festivals happen all summer long, all around the world. This is but a small glimpse at 4 festivals in the United States, and there are many more to be found.

Langerado Music Festival, South Florida

The music festival season got off to a rocky start to say the least, with the announcement that the Langerado Music Festival, which was set to take place for the first time in the city of Miami, Florida March 6 through March 8, was cancelled with little more than a month's notice. Though the Langerado Music Festival has taken place at various sites in southern Florida, the festival's promoters admit that moving the event into the city of Miami was a big mistake, and they are currently in the planning stage of Langerado 2010 - back at the Seminole Big Cypress Indian Reservation in the Everglades of southern Florida.

Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival, Indio, California

One of the largest and most prolific music festivals since the original Woodstock, Coachella hosts one of the most diverse lineups and eclectic audiences around. 2009's Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival took place April 17 through April 19, and featured such national acts as Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, The Cure, The Killers, and many more.

Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival, Manchester, Tennessee

Another festival that has seen a great deal of success in Bonnaroo - and with annual crowds of 80,000+ concert goers, some diehard fans have begun to regard Bonnaroo as the mainstream, commercial music festival. In an attempt to return to its roots, however, the Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival 2009 lineup features 2 nights of jamband legends Phish, Bruce Springsteen, Nine Inch Nails, The Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Public Enemy, Gov't Mule, Merle Haggard, Girl Talk, and The Dillinger Escape Plan, just to name a few.

Rothbury Festival, Rothbury, Michigan

Newcomer to the festival scene, the first ever Rothbury Festival was held over 4th of July weekend in 2008 - and has been touted by many as the best festival of the year. Though bankruptcy threatened the festival's return they have excited festival goers once again with their initial 2009 lineup, which includes The Dead, Bob Dylan, The String Cheese Incident, Willie Nelson, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley with Nas, G. Love and Special Sauce, and more.
