Lorazepam is most often prescribed to treat anxiety or panic attacks, but is often prescribed for sleep as well. Most common lorazepam side effects include sedation, confusion, depression, hyperactivity, and light-headedness.
These lorazepam side effects are common, but usually over come within the first few days of therapy. Lorazepam is a gentle medecine that most people find very tolerable. Lorazepam side effects are the least common of the benzodiazepine family. Most commonly lorazepam side effects are seen in the elderly. Like the rest of the benzodiazepine family, lorazepam has the side effect of dementia that is most often seen when administered to seniors.
Blurred vision and forgetfulness are also commonly seen side effects. If these become severe, ask your doctor if a dose before bed is better for you. Lorazepam has a very long half life, so it can effectively be taken once a day.
Lorazepam is most often prescribed as a pill, 1-4 times daily, although it is commonly give as an injection for in-patient treatment.
Side effects should fade within the first few days of use. If you experience any side effects not listed, or if side effects worsen, contact your doctor. Some side effects such as drowsiness may be a permanent effect. Lorazepam is most often taken before bed for this reason.
Lorazepam is an easy medicine. It is the least habit forming drug in it's class, with the mildest side effects, so it is often prescribed for anxiety issues in short term treatment. Treatment for longer than eight days needs to be evaluated by your doctor for increased side effects, tolerance, and abuse. Work closely with your doctor when taking any medicine for a mental disorder.
Every patient reacts differently. Please use the above as a guideline only. More information can be obtained from your doctor or pharmacist, or by performing a thorough web search for 'lorazepam side effects.'
