"Lord of the Flies" at Wheelock Family Theater (A Part of Wheelock College) in Boston, Massachusetts
Play Critique
The actors all memorized their lines very well. I think Carlos Rojas did very well as Perceval. He really got into that character like a professional especially when he was crying (made to cry). The part about Jacob Brandt as Piggy wanting his specs was very well staged. And even Jacob Brandt (As Piggy) being pushed off the set by one of his fellow actors was made to look both really real and very believable.
The set looked like a skateboard park. The costumes were nice clothes in the first act, but, in the second act & third act, these particular clothes looked all tattered, torn, and raggedy. A fire was used (not a real fire). The fire was really a white cloth in some kind of small machine blowing upwards. The lights would dim when the boys started to act like savages in a savage staged dance. Piggy was the only person around wanting to restore order. He would always want people to come together for a meeting and he always made it a rule, enforced by Ralph, that whoever is holding the conch is allowed to speak. The conch is a symbol of restoring order. It, though, I must add, didn't always work. The conch would also be used to recruit people (get people together). Ralph would blow into the conch, which the other boys would hear, and everyone would gather to the same place (well, almost everyone) (at least that was the idea). Jack would form his own gang in which this particular gang would become a group of savages and traitors in the process. Jack was, indeed (& clearly), the nemesis. He was against restoring order at all costs. Piggy & Ralph would, in many parts of the play, be seen quarreling with Jack. Piggy & Ralph would represent the good forces and Jack would represent the evil force. So, as one can imagine, this play, like many truly great stories of our time, is really about the good forces versus the bad forces (in other words, good versus evil). The story, to sum up, is about how a civilized group of boys, when put into a precarious situation, like being stranded on a desert island, can rebel against each other and turn against each other, unfortunately, resulting in death and constant bombardment (a predicament that the human race should be ultimately ashamed of).
