If you're a fan of fantasy novels and movies, J.R.R. Tolkien's famous story of Middle-earth is one of the best places you could look for costume ideas. There are many different costumes in "The Lord of the Rings" that you could choose from. Here are some ideas for Halloween costumes based on the most popular characters in "The Lord of the Rings."

Lord of the Rings Hobbit Halloween Costumes

Hobbit costumes are best for children and men or women with a small build. To make a Frodo Baggins hobbit Halloween costume from "The Lord of the Rings," find a white shirt, a long-sleeved rust-colored cardigan sweater and a brown sweater vest. Put on a long brown coat over the shirt, sweater and vest. Find a simple hooded cloak or cape made from gray or green wool. If you don't want to buy your cape, you can make it yourself using a pattern such as Simplicity 9887. Use a piece of jewelry such as a brooch or pin to clasp the cape at the base of your throat. Cut off a pair of brown pants just below the knee. Go barefoot and attach some fake hair to your feet with spirit gum. If your hair doesn't look like Frodo's wear a dark curly wig.

To make a Samwise Gamgee Halloween costume from "The Lord of the Rings," find a white shirt, a gray woolen jacket or vest and a pair of gray pants. Cut off the pants below the knee as in the Frodo Baggins Halloween costume. Wear a belt with a large buckle or a pair of suspenders and sling a bag with a long strap over your shoulder. Find or make a gray woolen cloak or cape. Use spirit gum to apply fake hair to your feet. If your hair isn't like Sam's, get a short blond wig.

Lord of the Rings Elf Halloween Costumes

To create an Arwen elf costume from "The Lord of the Rings," get a long-sleeved full length black gown. Attach some brocade fabric to the neckline and the upper sleeves of the gown. Attach large red bell sleeves just above the elbow of the dress. If your hair isn't like Arwen's, get a long black wig and curl it with sponge rollers. Wear pointed elf ears.

To make a "Lord of the Rings" Legolas elf Halloween costume, get a white shirt, some soft gray athletic pants and a long brown microsuede tunic or jacket. Also find a long brown hooded cloak or make one yourself. Find or make some vinyl or leather vambraces for your forearms. Also get some tall black boots. Find a prop bow and arrows and a quiver to strap on your back to hold the extra arrows. Attach elf ears to your own ears. Get a long straight blond wig and style it away from your face by pulling the front portion of the hair into a ponytail.

Lord of the Rings Wizard Halloween Costumes

You can create a Gandalf the Gray costume from "The Lord of the Rings" by getting a long gray robe, a gray hooded cloak and a braided rope belt with a small metal buckle. Find a large wooden branch and whittle away the bark to make it look like a wizard's staff. Wear a long grayish-white wig and attach a matching beard and mustache to your face with spirit gum. Finish your Gandalf the Gray costume with a gray pointed wizard's hat.

Make a Gandalf the White Halloween costume by pairing a long white robe with a white hooded cloak. Clasp the cloak at your throat using a silver-toned pin. Get a white wig and fake beard and mustache. Wear a leather or vinyl belt around your waist. Find or make a long staff with a crown at the top with an intricate criss-cross pattern. Paint the staff white.
