Coal Miner's Daughter Fights Pneumonia

It has was announced this weekend by a representative of Loretta Lynn's that the country and gospel music singer was in the hospital over the weekend with the early stages of bacterial pneumonia. Lynn, who is 76, had been scheduled to perform in KY and N.C, over the weekend, but it was announced she was in the hospital and had to cancel the show.

Official Statement About Loretta Lynn's Illness

A statement was posted on her website Loretta Lynn Enterprises on Saturday night that said in part:
"Doctors have diagnosed her as the beginning stages pneumonia, and will continue to need rest. Loretta is doing well and is disappointed but feels confident she will be ready for upcoming November dates." That statement was recently updated to indicate Lynn is now recovering at home. Loretta Lynn stated, "It was one scary night… But I am feeling better and just gonna take it easy for a couple of weeks." She is scheduled to perform Nov. 3 in Knoxville, TN.

About Loretta Lynn

Loretta Lynn was born in 1935 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky. She really was a coal miner's daughter who was married to Oliver Lynn a few months before her 13th birthday. The marriage was infamous for several decades for his affairs and and their fights, but their relationship became the ongoing inspiration for her music. Her best-selling 1976 autobiography about her life and marriage became an Academy Award winning film, "Coal Miner's Daughter," starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones in 1980.

Country Music

Lynn entered the country music scene in the 1960s charting the first of her 16 number 1 hits in 1967. Some of Lynn's hits include "Don't Come Home A' Drinkin' (With Lovin' on Your Mind)," "You Ain't Woman Enough," "Fist City," and the song that became her signature song, "Coal Miner's Daughter."

Her music, including songs like "The Pill" and "Rated X," was often edgy and frequently banned from country radio but she went on to become known as "The First Lady of Country Music" and to be one of the most successful singers of all time in any genre.

Hurricane Mills Home

Loretta Lynn maintains a home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, billed as "The 7th Largest Attraction in Tennessee." The ranch features a plantation home along with a replica of her Butcher Holler cabin as well as a recording studio, museums, lodging, and other attractions. Lynn no longer resides there and has turned the property into more of a tourist attraction in recent years. However, according to an update on her website, it is at her Hurricane Mills Home where Lynn is now recovering from her illness.

In 2004, Loretta Lynn released her most recent album, Van Lear Rose. It topped the country album charts. Loretta Lynn continues to tour and has received numerous awards in country and American music throughout her long career.

    Sorry to hear that. I remember when they said that Bernice Mac had pneumonia.
