Los Angeles County Fair: Go for the Food - and the Animals!

Don Simkovich
Food is the number one reason people go to the LA County fair, according to the fair's web site: "1.4 million visitors annually, to graze and experience more than 300 varieties of national and international culinary choices."

The fair runs from September 5 through October 4 at the Fairplex in Pomona.

Up to 100,000 school children are expected to attend during weekdays during Fairkids Discovery Club Field Trips. Students may enter at 9am on Wednesdays through Fridays. On those days, gates open for the general public at 12 noon.

New attractions this year include:

Jurassic Planet

A prehistoric expedition featuring animated dinosaurs and interactive hands-on historical exhibits.

Gateway to Africa

Enter into another world as you are greeted with elephants that spray water out of their trunks and a jeep that awaits to take you on a safari.

America's Kids Under the Sea

Join us on an expedition to one of our planet's last frontiers...the oceans!

Los Angeles County fair staff are looking for volunteers to act as ambassadors and assist with questions the crowd may have. It is possible for people who work full-time to be volunteers as well.

The Fair is honoring neighboring cities during the month long event. There will be a festive Community Days parade and prestigious high school marching band competition, an Adult and Junior Community Hero Presentation and a host of other special events.

A community hero from each city will be honored during the community's day at the fair. These are deserving individuals who are unsung heroes and an asset to the community, quietly affecting change and contributing to the quality of life.

The LA County Fair is in its 88th year and has had more than one million visitors per year annually, except for one year, since 1948.

West Coast fairs really go all out! We have the old fashioned country fairs here, sausage sandwiches, fried dough, and FFs. Some 4-H displays and tractor pulls. Cotton candy and candy apples....Good God I'm hungry!
