The following are some places in Los Angeles County that offer ongoing workshops, short-term career skills training that is either free or low-cost to the job seeker.
Community Career Development - Established in 1972, services include, but are not limited to, bus operator training, resume writing and security officer training. There is also a program for veterans as well as those who've been displaced from the mortgage industry in the past few years.
Jewish Vocational Services Los Angeles - Offers ongoing workshops in interviewing, resume writing and MS Word. Career training includes bank teller training, nursing and a mentoring program for all ages. They also offer counseling for mature job seekers, veterans and women at risk.
Los Angeles Urban League - Has various programs for those seeking work as well as those who may be interested in starting their own microenterprise (entrepreneur). Youth programs are available ongoing throughout the calendar year as well as a one (1) month Customer Service Training program.
Mexican American Opportunity Foundation - With locations in Los Angeles, Kern, Monterey and Orange Counties, valuable skills such as computers, financial literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) are taught ongoing. Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board - With two locations in Lakewood and Cerritos, job seekers can find an array of resources including services for clients over 55 and veterans.
Southern California Indian Center - Vocational skill training and job placement services are available to economically disadvantaged American Indians, Native Alaskans and Hawaiians. For those interested in the entertainment industry, the P.A. W. program teaches hands-on training behind the camera - in partnership with InterTribal Entertainment.
Women at Work - this Pasadena non-profit has been around since 1979 and though viewing resources are free ($2 donation is appreciated) and men are welcome, admittance to most of their workshops range from $20 to $50. Workshops include, but are not limited to, QuickBooks, Photoshop, Grant Writing and Microsoft Office applications. There are also workshops for job seekers over 45, network mixers, career changers and entrepreneurial training. WAW is ideal for those who are displaced professionals or executives or are looking for this type of employment.
Additionally, there is an Employment Development Department (EDD), also known as One-Stop, in most cities as well as a WorkSource center that offers free access to Internet, faxing, photocopying and counseling services.
