Mary Starr Johnson-Gerard, Ph.D.
Is it time to start thinking about a summer vacation or a spring break get-away? Maybe you and your family are just ready for a break in your everyday routine. No matter what the motivator, Los Angeles has so much to offer for tourists that you could spend hours on the internet looking and still not feel like you know what to do for sure. This article has been put together to help you think about attractions in Los Angeles that are Free to no cost. Given the economy these days, freebies are a good thing.

California Science Center

One of the best deals in town for families is the California Science Center with its free admission. There is a cost for parking - $8/car and an additional cost for visiting the IMAX theatre, but there is more than a day's worth of fun things to do that won't cost a penny. Take, for instance, one of the free exhibits is CSI: The Experience which is a step into the world of forensic science just like you see on television. This is a hands-on experience and allows you to deal with a real life forensic problem, work it through to a solution and solve the crime. Way too cool!

Another example of a free exhibit is Identity: An Exhibition of You. In this exhibit you have the opportunity to interact with your real genetic and biological identity. Find out about your personality and how your genes play a role in defining who you are. Before you go to the center, be sure and check out their website so you know what exhibits are going on during your visit to Los Angeles. http://www.californiasciencecenter.org/Exhibits/SpecialExhibits/SpecialExhibits.php

Wells Fargo Museum

The Wells Fargo Museum is a must see for those wanting to get a close up and personal look at the Wild West. This museum can be seen in 30 minutes but if you want, you can spend more time letting the kids play on the life-size stagecoach and sending coded messages with a telegraph machine in the replica of an old time bank. The Museum is free and because it is not well known, it is not crowded.

Griffith Park

Griffith Park is a vacation in and of itself. As it is noted for being the largest city park in America, you can be assured there are plenty of things to do and places to let the kids just run around, play and perhaps picnic. Just to let you know, embedded in the park are a number of free attractions.

One of them is the Travel Town Museum which is a free outdoors museum preserving and celebrating the heritage of the railroad era in the western United States. At this museum you will see a variety of different railroad relics or objects and if you happen to be touring Travel Town on Sunday you can take a free ride on a live steam engine at the local steam engine club located right next to Travel Town. The rides are offered from 11.a.m. to 3 P.M.

If these activities leave you still wanting more, then you can also tour the free Griffith Observatory where the kids can look through telescopes and through all of the wonderful exhibits such as: All Space Considered and attending a Public Star Party. Be sure and check out what exhibits will be showing while you are in Los Angeles by clicking into this website - http://www.griffithobservatory.org/.

This is only a brief description of the attractions you can see while visiting Los Angeles and its' surrounding suburbs and townships. You may want to mix a few free activities with a few more than have a low to minimal cost. This is possible if you do some good research before leaving home. Just use the resources cited in this article as a way to get started looking for other cheap to low cost activities in LA.
