Lose Weight Eating Fast Carbs

Sarah Rachel
Fast carbohydrates are carbs that are digested very quickly and slow carbs take longer to digest. Fast carbs are beneficial because they give the body quick energy. Slow carbohydrates are junk foods or processed white bread and pasta.

Fast carbohydrates are whole grains like millet, oats and some wheat products. Fast carbohydrates are also fruits and vegetables such as spinach and carrots. Fast carbohydrates have a low glycemic index. A glycemic index is a measurement based on how foods affect glucose levels in the blood. This type of diet is best for people who work out intensely or runners.

Vegetables

Eat vegetables. Most vegetables are considered fast carbs, but some vegetables should be avoided like potatoes. Sweet potatoes have a lower GI, but not much lower. If you must eat potatoes, eat them raw and in moderation. Green vegetables like peas, kale and dark leafy lettuce are very fast carbohydrates. Celery and carrots are also fast carbs so be sure to eat plenty of these foods all day long.

Grains and Rice

Eat certain types of grains and rice. Barley and brown rice are both fast carbs. Eat barley for breakfast and brown rice at dinner. Other grains like millet and oats are also fast carbohydrates. However, if you have a gluten intolerance just stick with brown rice. A gluten intolerance is an allergy to grains. If you suspect that you have this allergy, see your doctor for further testing.

Dairy Products

Eat more low fat dairy foods. Nearly all dairy products are fast carbs because they have a low glycemic index. Yogurt with fruit along with skim milk and whole milk are great options. Avoid ice cream as this food has a very high glycemic index.

Fruits

Fruits are also good choices for quick energy if you select the right type of fruit. Grapefruits, peaches and pears are the three top picks. Oranges and raisins are in between on the GI scale.

Snacks

Eat healthy snacks. There are many fast carb snack foods which will give you quick energy like apples and peanuts. Almonds and skim string cheese are also good choices. Cheese is loaded with protein and calcium. Celery sticks with peanut butter is a wonderful fast carbohydrate snack.
