Lose Weight by Eating Watermelon

Ebie Harris
It seems like on a daily basis we are always hearing about a ground-breaking new diet. They appear just like the get rich quick schemes. These diets promise fast weight loss results. Unfortunately, these diets usually do not work for the majority of us seeking to lose weight.

Losing weight is no great mystery. We obviously need to burn more calories then we consume. You can do this by eating less, by exercising more, or a healthy combination of both.

I, myself, would like to drop ten pound in three days but when I realistically sit back and think about it I know it is almost impossible. If I were to lose ten pounds over a three day period that would mean I need a calorie deficit of 35,000 calories (based on the fact that in order to lose one pound of fat you would need a deficit of 3,500 calories).

Naturally your body burns a certain amount of calories each day just by doing our basic daily activities. I know I could create more of a deficit by eating less and exercising more. However, unless I exercised extensively for hours on end and ate only a handful of calories there would be no way for me to create enough of a calorie deficit to drop the pounds that are promised in such a short period.

Therefore I decided to stop setting myself up for failure and I found a diet that works for me; watermelon! I was never much of a fruit eater. I preferred the packaged sweets; chips, cupcakes, and candy. My drink of choice was always a coke. I would half-heartily try fruit and always announce that it was not for me.

I actually stumbled across this great diet when it was too hot to really eat anything. I was hungry and with the temperature reaching the low 90s I was not in the mood to make my normal mac and cheese. I open the fridge and there sat a watermelon.

Of course, it had gone untouched for a good three days. My son had seen it in the grocery store and wanted the "green ball." Once home I have to admit I was not motivated to eat it. I was not motivated to do all that work; to cut it open when I already knew I did not like fruit. It was so much easier to open my cupcakes.

So there sat the watermelon. I decided to give it a try. Cutting it was a little challenge for someone like me; someone who rarely uses a knife. When all your food comes in little packages there is no need for kitchen utensils.

I tried the watermelon and it was okay. It really quenched my thirst and it really filled me up when I ate it. The weather stayed warm for the next six days so I continued to eat watermelon. Instead of grabbing a cupcake for my son I gave him a slice of the "green ball."

The week passed and Friday rolled around. Every Friday I jump on the scale; I found it too depressing to do on a daily basis. When I hopped on I realized I had lost two pounds. Weight can fluctuate greatly so I started analyzing everything. Was this just a fluke? Was this real weight loss? Then I thought back to my week. The only thing I did differently was replace some of my cupcakes with slices of watermelon.

Of course, now I was excited and I decided that watermelon was not only okay but great. For the next six weeks I would eat watermelon for my snacks instead of my once beloved cupcakes and other prepackaged sweets.

Before each meal I would also have a slice of watermelon. Since watermelon is mostly water it would fill me up and I would in turn eat a lot less. Over the course of 7 weeks I lost 22 pounds. I did not change my activity level at all. By introducing watermelon into my diet I essentially consumed more water and less food. The watermelon was very filling. It was great to actually be able to sink your teeth into something opposed to having just a weight loss shake or a glass of water.

My suggestion is to start off slowly. Replace your snacks with watermelon and see how your body responds. Watermelon is not a mystery food and not a fool proof way to lose weight. If I had eaten the watermelon with my snacks I would have not dropped the weight.

If you are looking for an easy way to drop a few pounds watermelon may be a good option for you.
