Known as the smoothie diet for the simple reason of being centered around the key word: smoothie. Most of your day will revolve around drinking delicious and healthy smoothies. Dinner however will be your one solid food meal, but it still has to be calorie controlled.
Most people's diet plans fail because of two reasons. One, they are starving themselves and the hunger pangs (both physical and psychological) become too great and you have to reach for chips, or ice cream, or any other terrible food you can think of to fill the gap of your stomach. You see, dieting doesn't mean starving yourself, as that lowers the overall calories burned and puts your body into starvation mode. What does that mean? That no matter how little you eat and exercise, your body thinks it is dying and will do its best to hold onto every pound so you won't fade away.
Next, breakfast. Most people eat quickly digesting carbohydrates. Now, while carbs are needed in any healthy diets, fats and proteins are needed as well. They are great for energy and for keeping the hunger away. By ingesting these carbs, your body becomes hungry quickly and you are in the same predicament as before, reaching for cookies or candy bars.
The smoothie diet relieves this by combining a variety of protein powders (soy or whey are most common, I find whey works better though in my opinion) and fruits. This will create your breakfast, lunch, as well as mid-morning and mid-afternoon meals. That makes a total of five meals in your day, which is usually what the body needs (some people need up to 6-8, and if this is you there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are ingesting the correct calories).
What do you need for the smoothie diet? One, never buy those smoothie packets. While they are tasty and convenient, you want to create these all by yourself. It allows for customization, and limitation of high-sugar additives.
You will need: a blender, fruit, ice, protein powder, and plain yogurt. That's it. During dinner eat good foods like lean meats, good starch (browns instead of whites), and restrict all high sugar foods.
Combined with a good exercise program, you will find pounds flying off quicker than any other diet. You should never feel hungry, as the smoothies are combined with all the right carbs, proteins, and vitamins.
